Getting Rid of Default Track Sound When in Locomotive Cab!?

This in-cab default track sound doesn't seem to always "appear" when running some locomotives and/or in certain routes(?)

This track sound sounds something like - "da . da . di da da . clink clunk", and repeats as long as the locomotive is moving. An unusual and somewhat annoying sound which I want to get rid of!

I vaguely recall there was some method to eliminate this sound, but this was many years ago. I don't recall how this was done.

Currently running Europe2 route (Innsbruck to St. Anton) as a test using a CP SD9043 locomotive with loco sounds from the file mlw_710g3abc.zip. And specifically using the cab sound file 710G3C_CPcab.sms.

Now from searching for similar problems at this forum, it seems the global sound files mp_rail_low1.wav and to_rail_low1.wav in particular are the source of this track sound(?) So I deleted both of these files, and to be certain I also deleted similar files in the series (mp_rail_low*.wav and to_rail_low*.wav). Files were deleted to the recycle bin, they were not (yet) permanently deleted.

Despite deleting these sound files I continue to get that annoying in-cab track sound!? Where is this sound coming from?

Any ideas, please?

Look at the sms file,and play the sounds one by one.Delete the sounds you do not like and amend the sms files.If you have any payware routes,they may have their own track sounds which you can use instead of the default ones.Look in the f/l,there are several files there,I have not tested it,but try Joseph Realmuto's "Modern Track sounds"

There was also a replacement track sound produced by a UK company called Railwaves which was a much nicer jointed track audio effect. However it was payware and the company long ceased trading.

The default Kuju sound is truly awful (and they repeated that with the original track sounds included in Railworks!)

A few years ago I was hoping to get permission to release the RailWaves Track Sounds and tried to contact Tom Williams of Alpha Two Five Ltd (= railwaves.com). I found his original 'phone number, but he'd moved on!!

If it's of any interest, the complete RailWaves track sounds are included in the West Somerset Railway add-on.

Not necessarily, and, although the documentation states that "... they are accurate only for the UK", there's nothing to stop them being used on any route. I believe they are jointed track sounds so are not suited for modern routes with their continuous welded rail track.

After more detailed searching, the cab *.sms doesn't have anything to do with the track sound.

The Sound folder in the MSTS installation (under \Train Simulator) actually has the track sound *.sms and associated *.wav files. This was found by examining the route (Europe2 or Innsbruck to St. Anton) ttype.dat file. That file points to the sms file which in turn points to the wav files.

By trial and error, the best way to remove the unwanted track sound was to edit out the track sound wave reference within the associated sms file.

If just deleting the offending wav files without editing the associated sms files, then there is a high risk of MSTS crashing (back to desktop), as I've found. Probably because the associated sms file couldn't find the now missing wav files which led to MSTS delays and subsequent crashes.

sms and wav files not in my paygrade, .... I have found this solution works for OR ( don't know about MSTS ) ...substituting a none.wav
or no.wav and renaming the file same as wav file called for in sms file. That way, no editing of sound file, file is called but no sound.

Those are securely backed up on several CD's and DVD's.

I also think Mid East Plus (which I'm currently driving now to take my mind off the godawful numbers today) has a custom default track sound for the sms in the route, according to the readme so if anyone has that, they could copy across.

Yes, I am (now) aware that the wav files can be safely deleted provided the associated sms files are edited to remove references to those deleted wav files.

I think the quickest way around this in the meantime is to just edit sms files and remove references to their associated wav files. That is what I have done, and no longer have the annoying default " . . clink clunk" sound!

I'll consider using alternative track sounds, but for the moment I'm happy to hear just the engine sound with little else added!
