Wav Sound Not Playing After Editing With Acoustica

Editing an engine run 8 wav file to remove or minimize a mid to high frequency whine which is somewhat distracting.

Using Acoustica audio editor, the whine was minimized by using the equalizer. The changes were saved and then attempted to check the result in Open Rails (version 1.4).

But on throttling up the test locomotive, the run 8 wav sound didn't play back at all!!??

I checked the modified run 8 wav file using Goldwave, another audio editor, and Goldwave played the run 8 wav file fine! So it seems Open Rails doesn't like the modified run 8 wav file!?

I then modified the original run 8 wav file using Goldwave this time, and the modified run 8 wav sound did play back correctly when testing on a test locomotive.

So it appears Acoustica saves the wav file in some manner that Open Rails can't play the wav file back.

Although Goldwave seems to work on wav files OK for Open Rails, I prefer to use Acoustica as it has a better equalizer to modify wav files more precisely.

Why is the Acoustica modified run 8 wav file not being played back in Open Rails (but plays back fine under Goldwave)?

Is there something I'm missing when saving the Acoustica modified wav file?

    OpenRailsLog.zip

Open Rails log attached for reference.

I did note also that there appears to be missing "GEVO_FDL . . .sms" files. But I'm not sure if that has anything to do with Acoustica wav editing and saving issues?

MSTS is also unable to play back the Acoustica modified external engine sound!

So, Acoustica must save the wav file in some manner that MSTS and OR can't read (properly)?

Here are two wav files. First is the original unmodified wav file, and the second is the Acoustica modified wav file.

    Unmodified wav

    Acoustica modified wav

Examination of the files might give an idea of why MSTS and OR can't play back the modified wav(?)

I believe I have found the answer.

After internet searches and after experimentation, it seems that Acoustica (like some other audio editors) save the wav files in a slightly different format. These different format wavs have the header RIFFdÓ . . WAVEJUNK as seen by using a hex editor.

Normal wav files usually have the header RIFF . Ó . . WAVEfmt and seem to be written by most audio editors.

It seems that MSTS and OR can only read normal wav files with the usual header RIFF . Ó . . WAVEfmt , and can't read wav files with the unusual header RIFFdÓ . . WAVEJUNK!

Solution? If wanting to use a wav file for MSTS and OR from an audio editor that saves wav files with the unusual header (RIFFdÓ . . WAVEJUNK), then open that unusual header wav file in another audio editor. Select all the wav within the editor and save it again as a wav file overwriting the unusual header wav file.

Check that the overwritten wav file has the usual header (RIFF . Ó . . WAVEfmt ) using a hex editor. Then this overwritten wav file should work under MSTS and OR. Or you can just try the overwritten wav file and see if it works (most likely will work, as most audio editors seem to save wav files with the usual header RIFF . Ó . . WAVEfmt ).

in any case, msts and open rails need sounds created or edited by goldwave for their correct operation, audacity or another editor will not do what goldwave does so that the game reads the sound as it should be, which is why today the famous goldwave for the sounds, without any problem in the simulator
