Hello my name is Kyle, nad i have getting more interested on Train Simulator games, specially MSTS.

My i want to question something, wiht my obvious inexperience i don't know how to install trains sets that have alias ( with the .sms) folder on them, like the F40 set 1, P32, P40, P42 nad the GE Hood locomotive Pack.

Could someone help on how install them "perfectly", one of my main issues is that i doesn't have a readme containing how to put it together the right way.

Aliased sound files usually reside in a folder named Common.snd that is in the Trainset folder in the TRAINS folder in the base MSTS install.
    Mine looks like this,

Every model or sound file that uses aliased files will come with a readme that will specify what goes where. Read them and follow the instructions.
After you've used a few, and screwed up a few, it'll start making sense. It's really not that hard.
If you are using Openrails, OR will run and give you an error log that will spell out what's wonky and make it relatively easy to fix.
If you are using MSTS good luck getting it to run at all if there are any mistakes.
Don't be afraid to mess around. Don't forget to make backups if you're too unsure. It's hard to permanently break anything because you'll always have in install files and can start over.
Check back in and let us know how it's going. Oh, ain't nothing perfect but we do the best we can and you will too.

It's a folder in the TRAINSET folder.

Are you using MSTS? Or are you using OpenRails?
It's been a while since I've dealt with MSTS but I might be able to help w/OR.

Remarks like that piss people off. You'll get an answer when people feel like answering....

This is the official home of Open Rails with news and links to content, vendors and the community. Open Rails is a totally free train simulator that supports the world’s largest range of rail content.

                    Hi Randy,
With respect, that is not a helpful response.
Switching to Open Rails isn't going to help in any way because the problem seems to be in file/folder hierarchy, which is the same for Open Rails as it is for MSTS.
...... and this IS an MSTS Forum!

                    Cheers,
                    Ged

From a previous questionHome page of this site. Articles (at the top of the page). Look under "How to" then go to Alias Cabview. It would be the same except instead of Cabview use Sound. ie.e ..\\..\\Common.snd\\GP38\\gp38cab.sms or ..\\..\\Common.snd\\GP38\\gp38eng.sms. They are not all the same. for example you may have to do this ..\\..\\Common.snd\\GP38\\Sound\\gp38eng.sms. I hope that makes sense.

Get the context editor from the "Sream4Me" website which is full of useful stuff for MSTS.

When aliasing sound files you do not need the whole path, but for cabview files you do,you have to point to the ace file in the cabview folder.

I realize that but I don't see a bunch of MSTS people jumping on here to try and help.
I'm just trying to get Kyle up and running and this is the quickest and easiest way to do it.
My regards to those who stick w/MSTS and can get it to work, but sometimes it's best to move on. MSTS is NOT newbie friendly.
                        Best of luck Kyle.

From a previous question about this :Hi,
If you have a folder called [B]"B&OFan.snd" in your common.snd folder, for instance, here is an example of how to alias the sounds to the engine of your choice:
                          1. In the B&OFan.snd folder, there should two .sms files; one each for "cab" and "engine" sounds.
There should also be all the .wav files that are called for in the two .sms files, though some may point to default trains (which is why default trains should stay in the trainset folder).
                          2. Let's assume, you are aliasing these sounds to a Dash-9. In your main trainset folder, open the DASH-9 folder to be aliased, then open the player .eng file. Scroll down past the lighting section to the first sound parm, which may by default read something like Sound ("dash9_ext.sms"), for instance. In order for your new engine (the exterior sounds) to be heard, we'd replace the "dash9_ext.sms" to look like Sound ( "..\\..\\Common.SND\\B&OFan.snd\\example_Dash9 _ext .sms" ). (for this example, the actual .sms file name is example_Dash9_ext.sms, and it is assumed that is the file in the common.snd/B&OFan.snd folder)
                          3. Let's do the same for the cab sounds (interior sounds), usually found near the bottom of the .eng file.
Sound ( "..\\..\\Common.SND\\B&OFan.snd\\example_Dash9 _cab .sms" ) is how this parm should look. Note: some authors use "int" instead of "cab", so be aware.
Save your .eng file, and test the engine in the sim.
AI engines should only have the exterior sound parm to edit, and I personally use the same sound as my player train, or a slight variation thereof.

If the sounds you want to use reside within a sound folder in another engine, you can copy the sound folder from that engine to the engine you want to have start using these sounds, then simply copy/paste the sound lines from the original engine to the new engine.

I am purposely leaving out the higher level intricacies, as not to confuse you, but there are slight variations on these examples to be learned later on.

                          Cabs -
If the desire is to alias from the common.cab folder, it is somewhat the same principle as sounds.
Lets use a similar example - you have a a folder in the common.cab folder called [B]"B&OFan.cab", and you want to use that in an engine of your choice. The author should have a folder included, called "ALIAS". Inside, are alias files for the cab, or cabs if multiple roads or variations exist. Simply copy the alias file that best fits your need, and paste it in your chosen engines cabview folder. Now open the .eng file, and find the cabview line, which should look like this example:
CabView ( default_dash9.cvf ). All you need to do is change this line to match - exactly - the name of the alias file you just put in this engines cabview folder, and you are set.

Again, if you want to use a cabview from an engine that has all the files included in that engines cabview folder, simply copy the entire cabview folder, and replace it in the engine of choice, and edit the cabview line in the .eng file to match the .cvf file in the cabview folder.

And dor example, If i download the p32 etc sets, If i do everything of the cadview correctly, Will i still nerd to make a sound folder on the engine?
But again thanks for all of this information, you can anwser If you want.
