    RE: make cars go thump?

Back before the 80's and car sizes where 50' or less and engine hp was 4000 or less it used to be a practice done by railroads that a train could not be started all at once. It was like a roller coaster at the top of the hill each car added to the trains momementom to pull the rest of the cars. Now a days the horsepower is 6000 and the cars are even bigger but the weights have not gone up that conciderably trains can get started without the momementom thing. Thereby eliminating the start of and stopping of a train. I can remember when I was younger it was like a wave or machine gun effect. That just made me think of something maybe it wasn't the weight of the train or the horsepower maybe it was Traction Control. Wheel slip technology maybe why railroads don't do that anymore there wheels are for the most part never slipping.

So this slack action only happens on trains that are moving as the train can be stretched most of the time. I would say for sounds of this type they would appear on trains that are pryor to the event of Traction Control.

It would be cool to simulate allot of different types of braking. In some cases the brakes are cut out of the car dew to machanical failure if enough of them are cut out they can pose a pretty big threat to the train handling. They essentialy become a dead weight with no brakes. It would be cool to simulate that although I think railroads would tend to cut the cars out of the train at the next opportunity.

Also it would nice to hear the "car crunch" sound that the couplers make when a train accelerates or brakes. Its almost like a wave that goes the length of the train.

    RE: make cars go thump?

I noticed, when I am trainspotting, that when a passenger train passes by at average speed its passenger cars' bogies are making sort of that exact sound (no matter which passenger car, either Russian or an American, I've heard both make same sound), they make that DISTINCT sound sort of like soft and very smooth grinding kind of sound (wheels rolling on rails), and when going at higher speeds are making a kind of whizzing/alomst howling sound (rpm of wheel axis in the cart/bogie).

Would there be any way of IMPLEMENTING that idea (described in very this message) of making cars have that constant sound when going at average-plus speeds to bring MSTS "audible realism" to higher level???????!!!!???!!!?

*(average speed is ± 30 to 60 km/h in this case)*

I was just wondering if there is any source of recorded sounds of trains on the interNet/Web that anyone here is aware of?....

Cars do make constant sound (that I've had described at the top of this message) even on welded and very very smooth tracks

TGV (french hi-speed pass.train) still makes these whizzing/howling, soft/smooth metal grinding and crazy sounds, it still runs on welded track.. AND damn STILL makes sounds (not the joint sounds though, does but rarely). I think that's what's needed the most... these sounds and freight rumble/bumping of wheels sounds.

There may be a solution for the wheel and track noise, I am after it and I will tell you about it in a new thread, because we discuss things, that might interest all noise developers.look under "Basics:....". Wait a few hours...

You can send me the wav(s) and sms and I'll give it a shot, if you want. I don't know what I'll be able to do with it, but we can find out. My email that can actually handle attachments of reasonable size is smmille1@ameritech.net

I made a sound .sms file for a flat wheel car. I still can't get it right though. The sounds start at about 10 mph , but I'm unable to get it to speed up as the train speeds up. I put it on the shelf for now.

Yeah, the ideal way would be to write an .sms file with the thumping, but my thought was that people would then either have to go in and retrofit some of their existing rolling stock, and have two different copies of the cars they want to be "thumping." I'm trying to think if there's some way it could be scripted so that existing cars would occasionally randomly make this noise in the external views, but there are plenty of problems with that, also. The best way, I'm sure, is to create a separate .sms file.

It seemed to me that it would make sense that the thumping would in the .sms file for a specific car, while all the other stuff you mentioned would be attached to the track. Then the thumping would always be heard from the same car and could also be speed related. Does that make sense? I'm working by what I think it should be like, not how Kuju designed it, so I could be making assumptions that aren't true.

Actually, I've recently made some trackside recordings, and I have some plans for cleaning them up and using them for MSTS. I think I can get good plain track noise, track noise with flange squeal (for use as a sound region, ie. in curves), isolated flange squeal noises (to be played randomly for each car when the train is moving slowly), and the flat-spot thumping (which I have yet to decide how to trigger that).

    make cars go thump?

Here's a thought/suggestion for anyone with the skills and time to spare:
Has anyone given thought to making sound files for a freight car that replicates the repetitive thumping/banging sound you hear one making occasionally due to a flat spot on its wheel(s)?
I don't know much about the feasibility of this - the idea just popped into my head and I thought I'd post it in case anyone wants to do this.

Thus ends my months of lurking.
