SLSF (FRISCO) Springfield Sub ca. 1950

    Hello all, Cade here!
I'm back and I have recently began construction on the first 50-mile release of what will eventually sprawl into a 405-mile (mainline) route, at least the first version, the St Louis-San Francisco Railway's Springfield Terminal and Springfield Subdivision. This subdivision of the Frisco ran between Springfield, MO and Monett, MO, with branch lines to Ozark and Mount Vernon. Springfield was the hub of the railroad and was located on her crossroads of the St. Louis-Texas and Kansas City-Memphis-Birmingham mainlines, and the location of the railroad's offices, major shops, and three major yards, including the massive classification yard at Kansas Ave. The city was served by several major SLSF passenger and freight trains and was also the end of a Missouri Pacific branch that interchanged with the Frisco. Monett was the meeting point of several of the railroad's branches and subdivisions, including the Ft Smith and Cherokee Subs, along with the Joplin Branch. In the late 1940's and early 1950's this line would've been crawling with action.

    The Route:
The Frisco Springfield Sub for OR will be the complete sub from Monett to Springfield along with all branches and spurs, and will also include all of Springfield being modeled and detailed in this first release. I am using aerial views from 1959, Sanborn maps from the 1920s and 1930s, and track charts/schematics from the 1960s, so that is one reason why 1950 was chosen as the date. The other reason is because the Frisco dieselized by 1953 so I want this to be in the peak of the railroad's transition era, where first generation diesels served side by side with the SLSF's beautiful 4-8-4s and Heavy 4-8-2s, in my opinion some of the most beautiful steam locomotives ever to be built. (As this route gets nearer to completion if any of the more talented steam modelers need a new project check those out and the other Frisco locomotives of the era ) Plenty of switching, mainline freight, and passenger action to go around.
So far I have the track laid out around MK Junction heading east and south on the Ozark Branch. Next I will be moving west towards the station. I plan on laying all of Springfield out before heading towards Monett.

    Future Plans:
This version is just the beginning of a route I have planned and dreamed of building for a few years now. The first full version will include this section along with the Ash Grove Sub to Fort Smith, KS, the Lebanon Sub to Newburg, and the Willow Springs Sub to Thayer. Possible extension past there will be along the Missouri Pacific and the SLSF's lines in far Southwest Missouri.

If anyone is interested in helping out or just giving general pointers, feel free to PM or e-mail me!
    Thank you,

    10/12 Update

In the past week, I have been able to nearly complete the track layout on South Springfield, only needing to lay out the Phelps Ave industrial area. South Springfield is the location of the Passenger Stations and Freight Houses(both Frisco and MoPac), the south Car Shops, the secondary South Yard, MK Junction, the Ozark Branch and numerous industries strung out along Mill St and Phelps Ave.

      Hello Cade!

Any Frisco-based route is a welcomed addition.

Are you using Digital Elevation Models (DEM) on your route? If not, you will lack the prototype's terrain setting.

Hello Coonskin! I am actually, from the same source I found data for my KCO&S route, webgis.com I believe.

          DEM's:

Good deal. Over the years I've watched some new route builders lose heart when they discover DEM's are available... and they've got umpteen hours in a billiard table (no DEM) route that simply can't be converted to DEM's without a huge loss of work.

That would definitely be awful. I've known about DEMs for years so I made sure grabbing them was the first thing I did before anything else.

                    10/28 Update

This week, I was able to lay track all the way to Monett. Next week, I am hoping to lay out all of Monett and the Mt. Vernon Branch. After that, track work will be done and I will be able to begin scenerizing the route.

                      11/4 Update

This will probably be my last update for a bit until I get some good scenery developments but the track layout is now complete.

                        1/2 Update
First off, happy New Years everybody! I didn't realize it had been two months since my last update. The track work has been completed as I said before, but also the main road layout has now been completed. I have begun to scenerize the past week, beginning with the backdrop to the southern half of Springfield, Downtown. I have utilized many of Paul Charland's fabulous models along with other creators' buildings to create a realistic look. The Heers tower will be one model I will build myself, and I have many industries to use for practicing my modeling skills.

                          Cade,

If you find reliable DEMs that will work with DEMEX or whatever your extraction tool is,
then my recommendation is to fill a DVD or two with all the DEMs you think you will
ever need. Reason is that the USGS seems to like to change formats on a whim and
a few years back I thought my days were done -- until I discovered VTBuilder. I
needed a DEM module yesterday to expand a future route a little as well as do the
DM terrain. So, I found what I needed in GeoTiff format, but this format from the
USGS won't work with DEMEX. So, run it through VTBuilder and create a new
                          GeoTiff file that works.

As for the route, it brings back pleasant memories of getting to know some fine
people, finest railroaders I've met up to that time. (1971) In 71,72, & 73 I,
along with my operating crew and the Southern Geometry Car, R-1, were
leased to the Frisco for 10 days. The Chief Engineer was a buddy of our VP
on the SR and the roads did not compete so this was okay. We were treated
like royalty out there and tested 400 or more miles a day. I remember that
one one day, we left Memphis, tested to St. Louis, then to Springfield where
we tied up for the night. Then Springfield to Monett & south to Ft. Smith & back
                          which was a short day.

                            Jerry,

Thanks for the information on the DEMs, that'll come in handy when I expand to the other 3 subdivisions. Also, it is always great to hear stories from railroaders (the Southern is one of my favorites). I'm glad it brings back good memories. I don't think I've really read or heard a bad thing about the Frisco or the folks that kept her running, maybe that is why the railroad is held so near and dear to the hearts of her ex-employees and fans. I know nobody was happy the day BN took over.

First of all, sorry all for being gone for so long! Now the reason why was because I had issues with my old computer, and I was just recently able to upgrade. I'm finally getting around to modeling again. This project is NOT dead and I am really wanting to finish it. So, enjoy these few screens of work around Ozark I've been messing with for the past week.
