    Circular tracks - loops

OK, I'll admit I'm way behind the curve when it comes to tricks and tips for making loops and circle/circuit tracks work, never had to use it before, but I've been led to believe it's possible. I've installed a bunch of sidings that make up the LAJRR on the Surfliner 2.3 update and find that I've created a circle track. Sure enough, after driving the new track, MSTS locks up bigtime. I hear that installing some zero degree switches will solve the problem, although I don't understand why. Can someone enlighten me, or point me in the right direction as to how to trick MSTS into believing the circle is a loop? I'm sure this has been addressed before, I tried searching the forum on the issue of circle/loop tracks, but you know how well that goes... Thanks!

It needs an escape path as the default route, which can be a siding or derail. Haven't tried the zero-d, but that might also work.

ORTS needs two or three signals inside the loop to prevent a path from crossing itself.

You can do loops and circles.

Thanks, Randy. I'm sure someone's figured out how to make a full circle work. Can you please elaborate on exactly how I can make that happen? I can't tell from your diagram. I've downloaded two routes that reportedly have full circles, looked through the track layout, didn't see anything enlightening, and neither of them actually work when trying to drive the circle.

Eric, here's a screenshot of my layout. The red arrows indicate the entry points and the wye in the middle. When trying to enter the wye from the south things lock up. When switching into the siding in the north (Commerce) things lock up. You mention a default path; coming in from the south at the wye, the default path lies forward, not through the wye. When I switch into the wye the sim locks up. Click image for larger version Name:	Image1.jpg Views:	0 Size:	52.7 KB ID:	2308522

Are there any signals? You might need those in place to avoid a path from calculating forward onto itself.

No, these are all industrial sidings well off the main path that eventually connect back to the main line. The whole area of the LAJRR is unsignaled. But I could put some signals in if needed to make this work.. Any suggestions?

I'd bury an interval signal below the terrain on the converging legs of the wye on your center arrow (red is the top facing the signal):

They'll show up on the track monitor, but that's about it.

Thanks, Eric, but I haven't been able to make that work. I've tried intermediate signals, absolute signals, tried facing them in both directions, even tried bi-directional signals, still no go. The sim locks up the moment I try switching into the area in question. I am unclear, however, about your comment " (red is the top facing the signal):" Maybe I'm still doing something wrong.

The signals should be on both legs facing into the junction.

In this case, the signal is buried, and the track marker points into the block being protected i.e. the direction the player train would travel.

It's possible MSTS can't handle this -- I haven't used that in almost ten years.

I tried that setup, along with several others, no go. I guess maybe MSTS really can't handle it.

For something like this, you might want to use TSRE. It's a huge improvement over the old MSTS Route Editor and is way more capable.

                          Hi Eric,

As project coordinator for the Surfliner upgrade, I'd like to ask if you could take a look at our route? And possibly offer some suggestions on how to fix the issues we are having with the loop tracks that make up the Los Angeles Junction Railroad?

I can send a link to the route so you can download it and experiment with our problem spot.

                          Thank you.

                          Robert

Is the route working in TSRE and OpenRails?

Keep in mind I'm still a part of the ORTS dev team, so... I can't say I want to invest time fixing something that's not behaving in MSTS if it's known to be working in ORTS.

I'm curious about this whole thing as well.. One of the (regrettably many) projects I have in the works includes one or two Seaboard Airline/Seaboard Coast Line projects that include the Miami area in them. The current Miami Amtrak station sits right in the middle of a loop and I'm HOPING that when I get down to this area, that I won't have to leave parts of it out to keep it from creating a circle.
