Ed included a WP 1776 or 1976?? Am I remembering that right? They were nice models.

    Cheers, Gerry

There's also tons of western pacific locomotives available from BLW/valleypass.

The TSN GP40's are pretty darn good.... I don't know if I could go backward there.

There are definitely a bunch of BLW sets for the FRC.

Since I already have the TSN/SLI sets, I'm thinking of springing for their Cali Zephyr with the RDC's.

Good idea. Although, I believe, the RDC ran through there at night.

What, if any, leased units ran on the Feather River sub?

It's whatever you want to run depending on the era....

Leasing as we know it didn't really start until after WP was absorbed into the UP.

My recollection... there were two world events that kicked off leasing. The initial "big event" was the 1979 energy crisis and the other event was the Staggers Act passing in 1980, which freed railroads from seeking government permission to abandon and downsize their networks.

Railroads who were facing bankruptcy that had 10-15 year operating leases (sale-leaseback) locomotives bought in the late 60's and early 70's started to return locomotives to the banks and owners (financing companies like GATX and Helm as well as GE and EMD) in large numbers. That created the initial short-term leaser fleets.

As Eric said leaser units really didn't appear during the WP era, but if you're looking for variety during that period, the Burlington Northern certainly brought their rainbow of merger roads onto the scene in the 70's and 80's. The WP Bieber Line (the other leg of the Keddie Wye that ran north to Bieber) connected with the Great Northern there and GN run-through power along with Spokane, Portland & Seattle units made regular showings on the line. After the BN merger all of the predecessor roads made appearances at one time or another, though the Pacific Northwest roads-GN, SP&S and NP-seemed to be prominent. Still, the occasional Burlington Route-painted unit would pop up from time to time. Other connecting western railroads would show up like SP or UP either as single units or complete run-through sets. During the UP years, pretty much any leaser that UP could have had on the west coast could have made an appearance.

Thank you both for those interesting and informative replies. I was indeed looking to replace some of the duplicated engines in the consists - just for the fun of it. But now I have a much better understanding of the kind of thing that would fit. Thanks again.
