Running TSRE Consist Editor without gathering Consists and Activities
Running TSRE Consist Editor without gathering Consists and Activities
Is there a way to run the TSRE Consist Editor without it going through all the Consists and Activities? Often, I just want to see the engines and wagons I have. I have a lot of Consists and Activities and TSRE CE takes a long time to go through them.
I have looking in the Settings file, but cannot spot anything that relates to this.
Unless I am mistaken, ShapeViewer allows me to see only one shape at a time. In fact, I've already put my own wrapper around that so that I can choose from a custom-built list of locos or wagons (but again, only one at a time).
But what I want is something quite different: the full list of locos and wagons (all at once, so to speak, just like TSRE CE normally does) — but without the program going through the Activities and Consists. I hope that is clearer.
Yes it is very clear (at least to me) what you want.
I have to say i have never thought about this. It sounds very doable with somekind of parameter maybe, honestly i don't know.
It would be very good solution for those who have a lot of "stuff" to load in the editor. I include myself here also.
If there is not, would be a way to do this in future versions?
Let me just add that, in replying to geepster, I was thinking about ShapeViewer by Paul Gausden, not the TSRE Shape Viewer, but I think the same applies — in the sense that items may be viewed by selecting one folder at a time, rather than having the whole contents of the TRAINSET folder in front of you.

Here is a suggestion: create a "mini-route" with all of your locomotives and none of your routes or consists. The 1-time setup will require a bit of time and effort, but if you keep it up to date with new acquisitions, you will always have it handy for reference (and you will have a backup copy of your stock, especially useful if it is on a different disk/volume).
Here is the minimum folder requirement:
1MSTS-STOCK
...TRAINS
......CONSISTS (empty)
......TRAINSET (all of your locomotives and rail cars)
note: you do not need GLOBAL, SOUND, or ROUTES folders, etc
Just start TSRE Consist Editor and open 1MST-STOCK.
So what is really gained from having the entire trainset folder visible in front of you? Especially when you deliberately aren't using it constructively to build consists? It represents a solution to what problem, exactly? Sloppy housekeeping and a reluctance to replace and trashcan half your outdated, duplicate content that ~really~ needs to go?
Those reality TV shows about hoarder houses are aimed at stopping the behavior, not providing software that allows hoarders to inventory what they have so much easier.
Below are some screens of freeware content that I produced and shared about 15 years ago on Mophouse. I can't believe how low our "community standards" were at the time to accept this kind of garbage, where the phototextured sides did not color match the ends. Someone else made like 75 different "6-packs" put up to the library that suffered from the same quality control problem. Why ANYONE would still have these 4,000 poly specimens in their Trainset folder to this day boggles my mind.
My original question was simply how to get around the TSRE Consist Editor continuing to gather information about Activities and Consists which takes up time. I think andreid's answer (thank you) provides a satisfactory work-around for now. That is sufficient for my purposes.
Disabling that check on startup *might* be doable. I'll dig a bit this week.

Thanks, a definite idea to pursue. Hadn't thought about doing anything like that I already have a back up flashcard with my entire Trainsim library, so easily done to copy just the Trainsets into a new install, with no routes or consists. Can then make new consists and export them to the install I want to use them in. Neat idea 😎!

It's my Train Sim world so I run HART RL anywhere I want.
I did manage to come up with a way to only scan the eng/wag files and to skip the con/act files. You can also choose to skip just the consists or just the activity consists.
loadConsists = false
loadActivities = false
By default, these are set to true.
This will be in the testing version of 8.005 that might come out later this week.

At the risk of bringing down the wrath of the Gods on me for sloppy housekeeping etc, my work around David has been to simply rename my consist folder if I don't want to wait for it all to load and just replace it with an empty one. I have my full trainset folder with all my consists and models in it and it takes a while to load and I have a work trainset that I use for doing reskins etc that just has a minimum of models and consists in it. Depending on which one I want, one becomes "trainset" and the other becomes "trainset full" or "trainset work" and I go from there. Eric's suggestion is a good one though and will save some fiddling around.
