I love watching some of the works in progress. One of my favorite routes set in the 70's has an auto plant, and these will be perfect.

Oh Man, I love that video, and I apologize for taking over the thread with progress shots. I took it as a challenge to make a late 1960s autorack when I saw the image in wish list items.http://www.railsimstuff.com

Isn't that just an NSC Type 5 with a different cover than the standard rounded one?
This is a transverse-mounted-coil car with 10 individual troughs for loading various sizes of steel coils. These cars also can accommodate 84-foot coils on each end, in addition to smaller coils at the same time.
Honestly, Grenbriar has docs on it. Should be do-able.Last edited by pwillard; 03-07-2023, 13:25.http://www.railsimstuff.com

Aren't Newer NS( don't think The Gray Ones Count, only Re-Painted*) & CSXT Black Ones those too( along with GATX Blue )? CSXT has also sold some in YN-3 to NS, other Class1s, & Shortlines too( but, not same Class/Model ).Last edited by marklester01; 03-07-2023, 17:16.

From the MBKX site:
This transverse coil gondola is a specialty coil car featuring 10 individual troughs for loading various sizes of steel coils in the same car. These cars also can accommodate 84-foot coils on each end, in addition to smaller coils at the same time. These cars are equipped with steel covers to protect the coils from weather damage.

In reply to Curt C,
In Becker, MN, along the BNSF mainline is a spur that runs about a mile or so east from the entrance to Northern States Power and the newly-installed interlocking that goes to Northern Metals Recycling. There is a scrap metal plant next door that makes steel coils and loads them into coil cars. About a hundred of them are sitting in the spur near Becker as I went along US-10 today. BN, BNSF, LW, NOKL, and other various roads. My apologies for not getting photos

Cool stuff.
So... it looks like it's ready for people to look at in ORTS. Alpha-release. semi-functional... no loads yet.
At least the couplers seem joined correctly.
Be sure to check out extra details here --> http://railsimstuff.com/blog.html ...and how you can get it to test it yourself...http://www.railsimstuff.com

well, as an alpha test... it's still crude... coupler height needs some tweaking... and the upper deck cables are still missing. I was working on some 68 Chevy Vans for it, I might finish them.http://www.railsimstuff.com

Really nice work Pete, been having fun with the Beta. Don't know if you're aware...there's a group 'Open Autorack Memories' on Facebook with lots of impressive modelers and former rr/auto industry folks there. They might be able to help you with drawings and dimensional info. They've been a great resource for my re-skinning and mod projects.

Autorack Loads
"Years ago someone asked if they could use the autoracks and add a FA with autos to them and post them to the library but I can't remember if he did or not."
That was me Paul. I had the idea to use some of James Hinman's great scenery object vehicles as a single drop-in load for your racks that would match the cars era. James graciously created a shape of 70's-era AMC Gremlins lined up as a load that could be added as an FA and I created new artwork for the textures. Unfortunately the FA shape file proved to be almost as large as the car itself, and with PC speeds at the time and OR's limited abilities compared to now, a carload of them would have dragged down some users systems badly so the project just died on the vine and was never released.
I really appreciated your cooperation in allowing us to try this Paul, and providing us with the source files was a great help.

Yeah, that's a reason why Imt trying to make a 60's Era Chevy Van that won't make the model a beast when it's done since it will hold 10 of them.http://www.railsimstuff.com
