Can anybody who is proficient with exporting rolling stock and locomotive models send me a PM? I'm working on a project and when I try to use it as a scenery object, its fine but using it as a piece of rolling stock, it has issues.

It’s a project I’m keeping under wraps at the moment that I guess I can let out of the bag, but basically, the bogies aren’t scaling right and the wheels fail to turn or pivot. I have them all named correctly, but here are some screenshots of what it’s doing.
As a static scenery object, everything appears just fine.
The problems start when I try to give it a WAG and SD file and make it run as actual rolling stock. Eric suggested that its a scaling issue. Something about the scale between parent and child and I have no idea what he's referring to.
Also, does anyone know how to make a part transparent? I'd like to add the windows into the carDon't tell me the sky's the limit, when there's footsteps on the moon..

Hi Josh,
Looks good - nice work.
The scaling and rotation is easy - just make sure you select all the parts of your model - hit [Ctrl] [A] - and APPLY "Scale and Rotation". You should see scale set to "1" and rotation set to "0" on every object prior to export. I've made the same mistake - with massive incorrectly rotated bogies/trucks - before.
The proper Bogie and Wheel rotation is setup by using the correct hierarchy and naming conventions. You need to setup the parent relationship as I've posted below. I use an Empty to parent my entire model to - just makes life easier. You need to use the official names as posted below - they are case sensitive - as this is what Wayne's exporter is looking for. You need "MAIN" and "MAIN_2000" - then BOGIE1, BOGIE2, WHEELS11, WHEELS12, WHEELS21, WHEELS22.
Translucency is pretty easy too. Just select "Alpha Blended" when assigning the texture to the Material. Then make sure your glass texture has an Alpha Channel.
We're here to help.
Regards,
Scott

I've been looking forward to a new gallery car model for a while...
Scaling has messed me up as well. Wish there was a way to lock it down...If you like what you see here at Trainsim.com, be it the discussions and knowledge in the forums, items saved in our library or the ongoing development of our TSRE Fork, I hope you'll consider a paid membership to help support keeping the site operating.... Thanks!

Hi Eric,
In many of the tutorials I’ve watched - applying scale and rotation - is continual part of the modeling process. Most seem to do it after doing any significant work on an object. It can screw up other operations you try to do when they haven’t been applied. It’s super quick to apply to all - just hit [a] when in object mode to select all - then [Ctrl] [a].

It becomes second nature to either reset the scale transform on an object after scaling operations or the first thing to check if a modifier or an exported object not displaying or animating as expected.
Nice model Josh. Thanks for sharing your issue as it will help others.
Cheers,
Marek.

Erick Cantu uploaded the full source for his Tank Car - you can import his source into Blender and pull the couplers off that - if they would work for you.

I do have a library collection of many useful parts... as well as my notebook on creating stuff for Open Rails with Blender.http://www.railsimstuff.com
Just Blender now, 3DCrafter only when I have to.

Well, I haven't yet collected stuff together as a download... but if there is a commodity part you want, just mention it... I'm talking about things like coupler lift bars, couplers, brake details... stuff like that.

Having parts available would be huge... I'm fine making the larger shapes but being able to import a coupler and maybe a set of Blomberg or GSC passenger trucks would unleash a bunch of new development. If you like what you see here at Trainsim.com, be it the discussions and knowledge in the forums, items saved in our library or the ongoing development of our TSRE Fork, I hope you'll consider a paid membership to help support keeping the site operating....
