You sort of also need to understand layer controls... like when using a grayscale blank, you probably get better results if you set the grayscale layer to a "multiply" mode versus messing with the opacity of that layer.
FYI: I use Affinity Designer for texturing and each of my masters probably has 50 or more layers.... layers are your friend... if you can use them.
