ORTS FBL GP38-2 are real SMOKERS

    Hi all,

These locos are real smokers. No matter what I do with the four lines in the ENG file that describe the smoke I still get dark black smoke. I've even set them all to zero and still get lots of dark black smoke. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have 3DTrains diesel smoke texture files installed in your main GLOBAL folder....you can download it from the wayback machine at the internet archive, link is below.

3dtrains, virtual railroads, railroading, railfans, microsoft train simulator, auran trainz, computer trains, computer railroads, train simulations, commercial addon content, 3rd party develop, railroad games

Also, if you are using the OR Diesel Engine Definition, you can adjust the color of the exhaust...it is a HEX code sequence.

      ExhaustColor ( 20161819 )
      ExhaustTransientColor ( 40212324 )

Switching to an OR diesel engine will give you more control over exhaust dynamics, plus better engine simulation.

If you are referring to, for example, FBL GP38-2 #1657, look toward the bottom of the .eng file. You should see this line:
        Include( "../NAVS_AUDIO/EMD_8_16-645E/Physics/EMD_16-645E-4.inc" )

That points to the NAVS "include" file that defines the locos's physics. In that .inc file, the exhaust color, rate, dynamics, etc. are defined. That is where the exhaust for the locomotive can be adjusted. With that "include" line in the ,eng file, OR is ignoring the exhaust parameters in the .eng file.

Indeed, if they have NAVS physics installed then that's where the adjustment should be made.
Thanks Wade, that makes sense, I was off on the wrong track, had not downloaded them. Apologies to OP for confusion I introduced.

I was looking at GP38-2 #1600. The ENG file has the line "Include( "../NAVS_AUDIO/EMD_8_16-645E/Physics/EMD_16-645E-1.inc" )". I looked at that file and found a line that said MaxExhaust 25.000. I changed the value to 2.000. Now I have a reasonable amount of exhaust. It will be a matter of fine tuning this number till the exhaust really looks good. Who would have thought to look in a sound file to change the engine physics.

Thanks to all for your helpful comments.

Yup, that's unusual. That does not look like something Erick would do. I wonder if the file has been edited by someone else before uploading in the library. That's puzzling to me.

There's nothing unusual about it - as documented in the readme, these sounds are not compatible with MSTS engine files or OR engine blocks that do not specify a 5-1000 RPM max/min with engine tables controlling RPM at each notch. This is because the entire engine RPM range from 5-1000 RPM is modelled so that one sound set can be used for all possible RPM schedules across different locomotives without the need for individual frequency or volume curves for every schedule. It also eliminates the problems endemic to dedicated startup and shutdown clips. For this reason, a set of physics files that sets the correct parameters for retrofitting content made by other developers needed to be provided.

I can guarantee that the actual root problem here is either a missing dieselsmoke.ace/dieselsmoke.dds or one that is way too opaque. Setting the max exhaust volume to 2 is simply incorrect. The correct maximum value for a 2-stroke engine should be the maximum RPM (in our case, 1000) divided by 40, or 25. This correctly synchronizes the exhaust pulses to engine RPM. The values as entered, coupled to a functioning dieselsmoke.ace/dieselsmoke.dds, should look like this:

Great explanation, Erick. Is there a particular dieselsmoke.ace/dieselsmoke.dds that you recommend? One that would be compatible with other locomotive content? Thanks.

The default trainsimulations one is fine, as are the light and medium 3DTrains textures. I am also in the process of testing a new set of diesel smoke textures and will probably upload them... eventually.
