This thread is dedicated to the steepest mainline grade in north America at 4.25% The summit was at the town of Saluda running downgrade 3.4 miles to Melrose at the bottom of the mountain. ANY train descending this grade running more than 8 mph was considered a runaway! The last NS train ran over this line on December 15 2001.

Hey thanks for the comment. It's a slow work in progress. It's a shame this was one of those routes that when you get into the editor, you see all these red lines! That's a dreaded indicator that one can NOT delete the original trees.....even if some are hanging over the track!Comment

@johnnyboy99,
There were autoracks and 86ft boxcars on the tail end of the freight trains but no solid intermodal trains that I can remember. Hayne Yard in Spartanburg, SC used to be filled with autoracks and 86ft boxcars years ago.
BTW, nice upgrade to this route. Where did the hi-nose SD40-2 come from?

I'm going to have to add my two cents into this. Great editing on a great route. I wish NS would take it out of mothballs or somebody would buy it and make it a tourist railroad. The route's only about 40 miles from my mother's home in NC, and we have been to Saluda, Spartanburg, Hendersonville, and Asheville along this route many times.
The pictures look just like Saluda, NC in real life. Awesome modeling.Steve Burr, PE - Clinton, MD
