    Conrail Kellog Branch

A few months ago I was thinking of updating the ACN route I made a decade ago. The route was steam and a few people said at the time they really didn't want to get into steam. I thought I would bring the route up to Open Rail standards and maybe into the mid 1970s while I was at it. A friend sent me and article that for some reason I no longer had from years ago and I was surprised to read that the Amsterdam yard crew travelled to Fonda and made up the FJ&G train, then broke down their train when they came into the yard before heading back to Amsterdam to do their own work. Being a yeard crew they could only travel on the mainline with their transfer caboose, they couldn't even take a car from Coleco off the FJ&G to Coleco in Amsterdam, that had to be handles by a road crew.

I made a test activity and took a few shots while doing it. The activity took 7 hours and 22 minutes to complete.

The Amsterdam yard crew heads for Fonda passing Amtrak 48, the Lake Shore just west of Tribe Hill.

While working the Fonda yard Conrail TV-5 passes.

FJ&G 21 brings their morning freight into Fonda as TV-7 flies past.

The FJ&G crew stops to exchange paperwork before heading back to Gloversville while ML-7 passes the yard heading for Niagara Falls then on to Michigan.

After returning to Amsterdam the crew of 8429 sorts their own cars into mainline and Kellog Branch cars. Amtrak 74, the Water Level Express runs past the yard heading for Albany.

The Amsterdam yard crew switches out cars from the freight shed as VNF-7 from Niagara Falls heads to Selkirk Yard.

Conrail TV-9 heads west while the yard crew makes up the Kellog Branch cars.

BW-10 passes the Amsterdam yard while 8429 stuggles up the Kellog Branch hill.

Last cusomer served on the branch and it's time to pick up the outbound cars and head back to the yard.

With all the cars delivered and the outbound cars sorted into east and west bound blocks it's time to call it a day.

The route contains Conrail's 2.6 mile long Kellog Branch, a challenge with all the grades. The 20 mile Fonda Johnstown and Gloversville back dated a few years from the FJ&Fv2 route, operations start and end in Gloversville and they were still using a caboose. The route also contains 23 miles of Conrail's Mohawk Sub from Rotterdam Junction to a few miles west of Fonda. I'll be including activities for the AI traffic used on the route. These take about half an hour to run.

    Paul :-)

          Hi All,

I've uploaded three new car packs to the library, they should be available tomorrow or the next day.

The first is a set of open hoppers from the coal mines in Pennsylvania, ten loads and ten empties.

The second set contains a B&M double track snowplow and a Burro crane, both served on the FJ&G
and stayed in these paint schemes intil 1980 when they were painted yellow by the Delaware Otsego.

A set of fourteen Contain and Penn Central boxcars from 1977 photos.

          Paul :-)

I needed a couple of cars for silica sand service to go to the new fiberglass plant in Amsterdam... might have gotten carried away!

I hope there's autoracks and auto parts boxcars for through freight on the mainline

I have been thinking of making 86 foot autoboxes. The ones in the library are pretty old and the textures are fairly dark. Never really thought about doing autoracks but I do have my own bi-level and tri-level CN and CP racks that could get converted. Both would be for AI traffic on my route.

                          Been working on them myself.

                          I have a 60's era OPEN autorack and a modern 89' Multi-Max underway...
