Most coke today is a byproduct of oil refining. An oil refinery not far from me ships probably 15-20 carloads of coke day. It is usually shipped in old conventional steel hoppers, presumably because those are what the steel mills were designed to unload. I was told that some of it is exported to Mexico.

Image 1) Somewhere on Donner a long "mi"grainer makes its way Eastbound.
Image 2 & 3) Just outside Black Butte and then again in Dunsmuir, a Westbound grain train and it's power...
Image 4) The Z-LBLT is seen crossing through this quaint mountain town. If you know the area, you know the station! 😉
Image 5-8) A UP managers special tours the California side of things, seen departing Bakersfield as the P-BKLA. All images in Bakersfield. (Excuse the "under construction" status in the screenshot)
Image 9) blasting through Tehachapi leaving the 23MPH speed restriction over the hill, the P-BKLA blasts by the under re-construction of Main Street.
Image 10 & 11) The next day I caught the P-LAPT again in two spots along Tehachapi, these are reversed by the first time was at The Apple Shed in Tehachapi, CA., where breakfast was being had and then again up at Walong as it traversed the loop.
