    Eastern Lines SD-70 Pack

Just got this one a few days ago and I noticed that it is really locked in as a ORTS - VERY ONLY addtion. I have two installs on my "K" drive one of which is 1MSTS-- and the other is 1ORTS--. I only use ORTS now and do not have MSTS installed on this machine so editing is done with TSRE. So when I opened Consist Builder I did not find the SD-70 items in the 1MSTS-- directory even though they are installed there. So then I ran the program & selected the 1ORTS-- directory and there they were, so the creator has really locked this package into ORTS. I still want to see if I can build an activity to run in the 1MSTS-- directory since that is where I prepare & create routes, using TSRE. I had installed them in both directories.

Regardless of that, if they are installed in a TRAINS\TRAINSET directory, they should show up in TSRE CE....providing all the dependencies are installed where they should be....for instance --- I'm assuming they would use a "TS Common" folder for include files ( if any ) sound, cabview & such.

That's been the case for about 7 or 8 years now, Jerry. When the vendor went to building models for OR-only they have slowly changed their models to eliminate multi-piece loco shapes that were needed under MSTS, the average poly count has gone from 20k to 60k, have slowly converted to using Include files, and they use DDS textures only, something that MSTS does not know of and will joyously 'boink' when it stumbles across.

They mean business when it comes to jettisoning all the MSTS era content with its MSTS limitations.

I bought that same set last week, and haven't been disappointed.

I regularly find myself having to copy items between my train simulations and generic installations.

One of these days I'm going to have to create an alias that refers to a common directory for all of my trains and consists.

Haven't there been discussions about creating virtual OR directories .... for example one trainset that is available to all OR profiles? Have I got that right?

I have been running that system for years.
I have the consist and trainset folders aliased with a program called Junction link magic.

Of course, as have I ... I was referring to having this type of linkage coded into OR .... with the user selecting where the target directory was located. No need to use programs that make links in the operating system.

I agree that the routes and train file location should be separately defined, and would go a step further to say that global should probably be abstracted as well.

OF course, forgot about that. As long as....why not any common folders...snd, cab, inc, etc. None of my OR profiles have any common folders in the trainset. Common.cab, Common.snd and Common.inc are all at C:\ORTS\ORProfiles\Common.Cab --- C:\ORTS\ORProfiles\Common.snd ---etc.

The profiles themselves being at for example C:\ORTS\ORProfiles\CANADA --- works fine. Any changes made to a sound or cabview file is available to all 40 profiles.
