FILLING A WANT - Alaska RR

Some months back I added the section of the Alaska RR from Seward to Anchorage. That was reasonable, about 130 miles more or less. Today, I generated the section from Anchorage to Fairbanks and on to Eilson AFB and a short branch near the mid-point. I started by copying the relevant world files from the first section, i.e. Anchorage to a few miles north plus Ft. Richardson, and my intent is to lay all the track and at least digitize the roads, what few there are and then release it as "unfinished". Denali may be a little short since we only have 10,000 feet vertical to play with and Anchorage is essentially at sea level. This section is a beast, 400 miles more or less, and it was hard to get enough tiles in it without going too far overboard. Eventually, I had 1700 terrain tiles and 197 DM tiles. I still have MSTS with all it's oddities and DEMEX on my antique XP machine so I used that to generate the route.

I should point out some issues if anyone else tries to create a route with MSTS and then take it to TSRE. Evidently routes created with TSRE produce track and roads database files as part of the set up. MSTS on the other hand produces these, only when you lay the first piece of track or road. So once the route is generated, remember to lay a piece of road and track some place out of the way and sink them several meters under the terrain. Failure to do this will just crash TSRE when you try to open the route. Do not later delete these first pieces or it evidently corrupts the database. This was not an issue with MSTS because you could recover by doing a rebuid. No rebuild function or separate program for TSRE so you would have to start over with empty database files and manually "touch" each piece that was previously placed.

I do have a high level idea on how to do a rebuild, but it's some weeks/months away from testing....

If anyone can do it, you would be the one. I just want to thank you for maintaining this website, otherwise I doubt we could so easily share ideas and content. From what you have said, your land in the free state of Tennessee is on high ground. I have friends that bought a retirement home outside of Elizbethton and it too is on high ground, but I can only pray for those who bought in the valleys. Take care.

Any chance of adding the track from Anchorage to Whittier, including the 2 1/2 mile tunnel at Whittier?

My wife and I did a land / sea cruise this past summer which included a trip on the Alaska Railroad from Denali National Park through Anchorage to Whittier.

Here is the train arriving at Denali Station

Here we have arrived at the west end of the Whittier Tunnel. It is one-way train and road tunnel, alternating directions every 1/2 hour.

We also did the White Pass and Yukon Railway in Skagway. This is my favorite photo on that trip.

          Thanks

            Bert,

That part is already in the "incompletes" part of the library. Some routes have been requested and my main interest is the L&N, and less so the Southern, all in the coal fields but having been manager of geometry inspection on the Southern, I am picky about track. So usually I lay the track, and major roads, and let anyone else "super detail" it. So, if you want to do that, grab the route (and yes it includes the tunnel) from the library.
