How important is it to switch to Windows 11?

I have a processor that's just below the specs required for an upgrade to Windows 11.

A few years ago when I had Windows 10 they did their normal Sunday update at the beginning of the month, only instead of doing an update they installed Windows 11 without my permission. Windows 10 worked just fine, the version of Windows 11 they stuck me with sucks. I don't think anyone actually needs Windows 11 other then Microsoft. There are things in 10 and below that you were able to go in and disable like MS using magic packets to start you computer in the middle of the night when it's off. I can go in and change my settings to select disable, but if you check the next time you turn the computer on it right back to active. They have been doing almost daily updates to my version, I looked up the proper way to disable updates so I could do them manually, right off the MS site. I followed the instructions and thought I had it into manual mode but just like the magic packets, the next morning when I turned the computer on and had a look, it's back to their settings.

Stay away from 11 as long as you can. I would think at some point MS will tell people they are no longer supporting 10 but maybe by that time 12 will be out and work better then 11.

I have just bought a new desktop with win10, and I won't allow it to upgrade to win11.
Win11 has adds in the start menu.

Win11 will be add central, microsoft want the add revenue that google is getting.

I have just had to replace my laptop, and it now has linux on it.
I am playing with getting OR running on linux.

Lately I've been getting full-screen ads out of the blue to upgrade to Windows 11 (up to 2x a day!). I've been considering the upgrade though, I'd like to buy a 512GB SSD and run just Windows 11 off of it. I've heard that having your Windows install on one can greatly improve general speediness of the operating system components itself, like startup, Windows Explorer, etc, even if that's the only thing on the SSD itself. Then I could keep my current install of Windows 10 nice and safe on my HDD, just in case an issue with installation or Win11 truly sucks, I can switch boot discs and go back in an emergency.

WOW ---- My gamer that I bought a year ago plus came with Windows 11 Home already installed and I've had none of those issues. Some things were changed from Win 10, (which of course changed things from past versions too) but basically similar. Wonder if it's something with updating an older version to 11?

From myself, I say XP was the best Windows after 3.1 ( which I still think was best of all ). Got to have DOS!! To many great game programs were made in DOS.

If you have the pro edition you can control all of that using group policy.
I actually like my 11 install.

Best to leave your system alone and not upgrade. Being you're below spec you'll only have problems after upgrading.
My laptop is still Win 10 and works just fine and still gets updates. No real improvements with 11 so keep 10 as long as you can.

(edit) I still have an old XP system that's my day to day workhorse and works great, but then it was never hooked up to the internet to get messed up.

I've been running Win11 for ages... no issues with current tools.

Understood, but does Windows 11 per se justify the cost of hardware upgrades?

                        Hi,

I understand that Windows 10 will be supported until 2025. After that, I suspect that it won't receive any updates to deal with bugs or to enhance its antivirus.

It's up to the individual user to decide if the cost of replacement hardware is worth it to not have the hassle of dealing with any possible virus attacks.

I'm in the same boat that my CPU is incompatible with Windows 11 but am still undecided! As I build my own PCs, I think it may be a (simple?) case of replacing the motherboard and processor, but I haven't looked into any other implications, yet!!

                        Cheers,
                        Ged

??? "adds" and "add central" and "add revenue" = Advertisements or Additions? There are no Advertisements in the Win 11 start menu

No. Until it is no longer supported.

Upgrading to Win 11 isn't mandatory but the addition of hundreds of millions of unpatched computers to the internet is a little scary, to say the least.
I have two computers that won't upgrade so they will be parted out or recycled.
