It seems that no one is safe from going to college these days. Another shooting took place today at Northern Illinois University. It was almost like what happened at Virginia Tech last year. A quick alert and responses by students and police brought the shooter down. However, the shooter killed himself. For more on the story here; http://cbs2chicago.com/local/nui.sho....2.654370.html

Now they said 5 confirmed dead including the shooter. Classes are cancelled for tonight and tomorrow. I wonder when the politics stop playing political games and get to the issue of gun control?

And...
Without seeming to be rude - it is very sad that people have been shot but, there are how many hundred thousand students on US campuses? How many 18-21 year olds are vunerable (mentally, emotionally and physically)? Factor in 'helicopter parents' andCampus life is a tinder box and it is a wonder that these sort of things do not happen more often.
CGW aren't you missing the point? A mentally ill person without a gun is a hell of a lot safer than a mentally ill person with a gun. A case in point: I am safer when you are without a gun than with.
hi,
It's all to do with the power of money, "gun controls" would simply mean that the rich and powerful would make less money and that would never do. is that plain and simple. The human tragedy is what concerns Joe public, its the bank balance that concerns those that manufacture arms and ammunition. After all, the whole purpose of producing something is to sell it.
yip, a sad reflection on a society that has the "right" to bare arms.

Ross,
Working on a campus, I do not think that it is just an issue of gun control. The care and welfare of students on 99.9% of uni campuses is appalling. A lot of these situations develop because systems for caring for vunerable students are either not in place or are not followed up.
Let me give you an example:
I teach a student. Student is upset. Student tells me the problem. By law I am responsible to inform the university. I tell the admin, the admin tells the student's tutor, the tutor emails the student - then either the student turns up or they don't. Most tutors don't give a shit and won't follow it up if the student doesn't turn up. The upshot - a student with a problem doesn't get dealt with.
The problem is that a bad situation of institutional incompetence is made worse by the lack of gun control. The worst that a student in the UK can do is abuse people on facebook.

I agree 100%! It's time to eliminate that stupid Brady law, eliminate restrictive gun control laws, and allow concealed carry on University property. The People mentioned in the Second Amendment need to have their God-given right to defend themselves against such lunatics restored!

On Thanksgiving Day about 5 years ago my wife called me from the spare room to tell me that someone was trying to get in the front door.
I looked through the peephole to see an individual fiddling with our doorknob and trying to force the door, informing this person that he had the wrong house did not deter his attempts to enter, the threat that I was calling 911 only increased his attempt to force the door.
I had my wife lock herself in the bedroom and dial 911 after I retrived my .45 and loaded the magazine.
When this POS finally got the door to give he was met by one very determined homeowner with a hand cannon intent on defending his wife and home.
No shots had to be fired as he took two steps in the doorway and turned tail had he taken step three I'd have shot his a$$ DRT(Dead Right There).
Had I not had the pistol who would have been safer?
This POS would have been far safer to do whatever he had intended had I not been armed,I much prefer him cowering in the bushes across the street and most likely in need of a change of underware when the local police showed up.

Blogo and Daley don't want us to have CC here in IL, despite all the studies to the contrary they still spout the "wild west" malarkey.
Here in Indiana where we have a concealed carry ability with proper permit the per capita incidense of home invasion and mugging is much lower than Illinois. Add this to the fact that Chicagos ban on fire arms has done nothing to lower their (gun) crime rate why would you think gun control laws were any good?
All the gun ban and gun control laws do is make things safer for the people with criminal intent. The stats are proving that over and over.
Laws broken;
Possession of a firearm while committing a felony.
Using a firearm to commit a felony.
Possession of a firearm on the campus.
Discharging a firearm on campus.
Illegally transporting of loaded firearms.
Carrying concealed handguns without a permit.
More then likely, there were probably a dozen other local laws dealing with possession of the handguns that he had violated as well before he even brought them onto the campus.
They have also proven again just how well the gun laws in Illinois and the local community were able to protect the students from this felon before he took his own life.
Now they said 5 confirmed dead including the shooter. Classes are cancelled for tonight and tomorrow. I wonder when the politics stop playing political games and get to the issue of gun control?
Yea, really, Illinois has some of the most restrictive laws on the book, and ALL IT DID, WAS INSURE A DISARMED GROUP OF PEOPLE...
I mean MY GOD Someone had the audacitiy to ignore the "gun free" zone!!!!
Imagine that, that someone bent on death and destruction, would go to a place where the victims, by law, would be unarmed, after all it is for their protection.
When will people get it...Seems like practically all these "mass shootings" happen in "gun free" zones..
Now excuse me, time to break out the credit card and order that German K98k Mauser for my Collection. (I mean this literally, not figuratively , it is on my short to-do list this morning)
NIU is just a few miles from my house. Over the years I have played music with a lot of these kids, known a lot more, and when you live near a university it has an influence on you. Gun control would not have helped here, as someone who is twisted enough to bust into a classroom and shoot people probably is not concerned about laws anyway. But this should not be a debate about gun control. This is a horrible tragedy and parents have lost childern. These were sons and daughters, brothers and sisters. Somewhere there are parents whos son went and shot a bunch of people. Talk about a tough situation to be in. Its ironic that if the shooter had not shot himself how many more would have been murdered? The campus police are not allowed to carry guns, which more that likely delayed response times. But sorry to say there are no easy answers to this kind of situation. We just had 5 more people shot in the back of the head in Tinley Park a few days ago, and sad to say this is so common nowdays that we hardly take notice. Humanities favorite sport is killing each other. Damn we are sick.

Point of order, I think the personal attack, if that is what you were intending, is out of line here Dan -
IF we want to call each other whack jobs we can do that a little more discretely and with some humor......
Robert is now free to reply in kind and then it spirals down into anarchy, again!
LOL

Thanks for blowing on the embers, and then complaining about the resulting fire.
"MILWAUKEE (AP) - Barack Obama says the country must do "whatever it takes" to eradicate gun violence but believes in the right to bear arms.
Obama says he's offered his Senate office to help Northern Illinois University with the investigation into a campus shooting rampage. The shooting happened in his home state. Obama was campaigning in neighboring Wisconsin.
The senator, a former constitutional law instructor, says he believes the Second Amendment to the Constitution grants individual gun rights.
But he says it's subject to commonsense regulations like background checks."
Wondering what an Obama Presidency would look like:
