Are you buying a ton of land?
Any plans to put a 1/8 scale railroad on the land someday?
Will you be able to get wired/fiber internet to the property?

On average roughly every 500 red counties produced about 6% of the GDP. Meet the 'takers'. That difference between 70% and 6% equates to a big, big, big difference in economic opportunity
      Yeah, context matters there....

The flaw with using GDP as a measure of makers and takers is it doesn't really reflect "what" is contributing the most to GDP.

It's "professional services" e.g. consulting, engineering, followed by real estate, entertainment, sports and banking/finance.... arguably things that could go away tomorrow and the country would still survive.

Things like manufacturing, mining and agriculture are much further down the scale for contributions to GDP, but absolutely more critical to the country being able to function.

Poverty rates are another red herring...

Some like to point at WV having the most poverty in the country.... there are about 310,000 people living below the poverty level in a state of 1.8M.

Meanwhile, Chicago alone has 450,000 people living in poverty. Illinois has 1.8M living in poverty (or put otherwise, there are more people living in poverty in Illinois than there are people in West Virginia...)

So... which is worse?... who is the bigger taker?

We haven't had it weighed, but it's pretty heavy with the trees. I'd say several tons.

No plans for 1/8 scale when I have the NS running 600 feet from the property line.

Pretty certain we have fiber to the telco demark. My brother in law (about a mile away) has better download speeds than I get in the Chicago exurbs.

Good luck with the move Eric, but I grew up in Nashville, left 61 years ago at age 24 and Tennessee gets plenty of the white stuff most winters and where you are moving to, don"t expect the roads to be plowed if there is snow. That is up to the residents. But when those NS trains pass, just remember that they contribute a lot to my retirement by way of NS shares. Though I worked 21 years with CSX versus 13 with Southern, I have an indecent amout of NS.

All my nonsense aside, I expect you will love it in Tennessee....grew up in southern Michigan and family loved to hitch a small travel trailer and vacation in Tennessee and Kentucky...have nothing but fond memories of both states.

Sadly ( to me and my memories ) Some things have changed...remember Gatlinburg as sleepy resort town...took a look at it on Google earth ... YIPES! Are there any small, sleepy resort towns left in this country --- or have they all "MacDonalded" past all recognition?

Officially we now have a new home, but will be another month or two before we are permanent residents there. Been here a week and enjoying it.
Heading back to New York at the end of the week. Now to do all that packing and throwing out,

Grew up in NE TN, but haven't lived there in almost 20 years. Fall and Spring are definitely beautiful in the mountains. Hope you enjoy it!

Quite true, expecting a fair amount going into dumpsters.

Took the AutoTrain this trip south ( booked a bedroom ) sure beats driving. Got in yesterday, and now sitting out Melton. Not to bad here southern Ft. Myers, but up north a bit is getting hammered - Sarasota / Tampa area

Fingers crossed -- it's hitting Sarasota and Tampa right now with 90mph winds. We do see a power outage at the Fort Myers airport right now as well.

If you like the snow, Maine isn't a bad place to live. Taxes aren't as bad as they used to be, at least once you get north of Bangor. Lots of hiking trails, snowmobile and ATV trails up my way, beautiful mountains, lakes, and rivers to enjoy if you are into that type of stuff, especially fishing or ice fishing in the wintertime. Trains are starting to be plenty. While not a super busy mainline by any means, CSXT and CPKC runs 6 days a week with locals mixed in, EMRY and MNRY run 7 days a week.

Actually... why am I giving away my secrets? You didn't read any of this, it's just an illusion.

Glad you guys dodged the storm. Or more appropriately, it missed you.

Shawn, Maine is indeed beautiful. But I could do without the snow.

We have all that in Eastern TN except for the snowmobile trails and ice fishing, which I'm totally fine with....

After twenty years of plowing snow, in work when a storm starts and not home until a day after it's over, and usually back again early the next day to finish up, has made that white stuff the last thing I want to see.
