I'll let the official trailer tell the story. This movie came out in 1959 and had subliminal messages imbedded in it to tell you when to scream. The s#&% hit the fan when it was discovered that there were also messages to buy popcorn.

Another Vincent Price move that scared me was "The Fly."

Reviews are out for the new horror-thriller film "Longlegs" with Maika Monroe & Nicolas Cage -- it is getting 4-star reviews.

So...back to thread...Tarantula (UA 1955 ) --- saw it at a drive-in one summer when we were at my Uncle's lake cottage. Movie scarred me silly, remember looking at the screen through a coat sleeve, like a telescope, so I didn't have to see the spider. Went back to the cottage that night, Dad turned down the bed and I picked up the pillow and underneath the pillow were DOZENS of small to medium sized spiders running around like crazy. I flipped. Would not sleep in that bed. They made a bed for me in the boat out in the yard.

I guess I overcame my fear, for --- moving ahead --- Clark AFB, Philippines 1970 --- sitting in the banana-palm grove in our Detachment compound, reading. Felt ( & heard ) a PLOP on my leg, looked down a saw a huge green spider lazily crawling around. Big green bulbous body on long green legs. Just watched it, then brushed it off my leg an continued reading. Found out later it could have been venomous.

            That face rings a bell.

Sorry, I couldn't resist the pun.

There is a scene where Charles Laughton is ringing the Notre Dame bell with his head.

Threads was much more graphic and realistic that the US TV movie "The Day After". It depicted nuclear war during the Reagan / Brezhnev era in a realistic light. Anyone that wants to see it, I know that it is on Tubi and YouTube if you want to see it.

And being that Mike brought up the realistic Armageddon-type movie with "Threads" and Fred brought up the great Vincent Price. A shout out should go to his great 1964 movie "The Last Man on Earth" which is the 1st movie based on Richard Matheson's 1954 novel "I Am Legend" (Which I read when I was 11 and it scared me more than the movies based on it.). It was a very intense movie for 1964 standards.

And a honorable mention should go out to the 2nd movie based on I Am Legend. And that is Charlton Heston's 1971's "Omega Man". I love that movie and my opinion one of his best movies along with another Sci-Fi horror thriller he did. 1973's "Soylent Green". (Read the 1966 novel Make Room ! Make Room ! by Harry Harrison it is based on, trust me.).

Remember everyone: "Soylent Green is People !!!!!"

This movie is the BOMB!!!!! I had to have it when it first came out on VHS back it the day. Starring Dennis Weaver and was Steven Spielberg's first movie (An ABC TV Movie of the Week to boot.) It got re-released as a theatrical release with extended scenes after it aired in 1971. Now I have visions of a 1970 orange Dodge Valiant being chased by a rusted Peterbuilt 281 (My uncle had one and rusted too!) through the SW desert. Watch the cinema version not the TV version, Like the encounter at the SP railroad crossing was a scene that Spielberg went out and film with a few more to make the movie 90 minutes for cinema. The crossing scene is intense.

Funny thing is Richard Matheson (I Am Legend) wrote the screenplay for Duel based on a short story he wrote for Playboy based on a real-life experience. I loved his written works.

Honorable Mention for a semi-spinoff of Duel is a 2010 movie named "Rubber". It is about a tire that comes to life and goes on a murder rampage through the California desert. I found it funnier than a real horror movie but worth a look.

OK, I will shut up now

Duel was ripped off by Black Dog, which I only watched because I'm a Meatloaf fan...

The Day After wasn't scary, but certainly left an impression. Introduced me to Jason Robards as well....

I remember back in 2005 when I was working the Stone Pony in Asbury Park the night Meatloaf played there. He and his band sat talking with the floormen like me after the show and one of the guys asked him what was the biggest mistakes you think ever made with your career? He sat there, smiled and chuckled then said Black Dog. "It was a bigger mistake than when I did Roadie." he said laughing. I told him, "Well at least they both had a version of Drivin' My Life Away." and laughed. He smiled, pointed at me and said, "Touché". And I told him I like Roadie, you have to love a movie that Roy Orbison is in. He was one of the nicest artists I ever met working down there.

I have the 4K version that came out last November with both the television and theatrical versions of the movie in widescreen. I love watching it with the volume on "11".

If you have a smart TV, CinemaBox app has Duel 1971. I just watched it on Roku, and it's 90 minutes of my life I won't get back..... but the SP train porn was nice.

I've seen plenty of scary movies thanks to Svengoolie. Duel was featured plenty of times. I'd have to say the best one he's shown was Killer Klowns from Outer Space. He's also done all the Hammer films, and the Universal classics.

The Island Of Lost Souls - 1932 - Charles Laughton, Richard Arlen, Bela Lugosi. Way ahead of its time and prophetic - genetically modified horrors, from the H.G. Wells novel The Island of Doctor Moreau. Was banned in many states, cities and countries. It's pre-Hayes code, too. "What is the law? Are we not men?" ... "He tell me, SPILL BLOOD!"
