If I'm just going out to sit and watch trains go by, I usually sit at a spot at Niota, IL (just across the river from Fort Madison, IA). I'll usually take a thousand or so slides with me that need to be labelled/sorted and make a day of it.

Living (milepost56) miles from downtown Chicago I can literally drive anywhere in the region of Chicago and watch trains. Four of my favorite places are the BNSF Racetrack with easily over 100 train movements during daylight hours, West Chicago IL at the junction of the UP, CN and Metra at JB tower with easily again more than 100 trains in daylight hours, Dolton were the UP/Amtrak crosses CSX, NS, IHB at the east ends of the CSX Barr yard and the Indiana Harbor Belt yard just to the south with more trains than you can count and Pine Junction near Gary IN with Amtrak, CSX, NS, Chicago South Shore and South Bend, Indiana Harbor Belt, Gary Railway, CPKC with so many trains you don't know where to point your camera next. Just ask Neil "Gallbandit"Keenan

Elkhart, IN was a favorite of mine for years. The Amtrak station was where the real action is at. It's situated near the very east end of the humongous NS yard. There's the museum in the other side of the tracks too. The Grand Elk railroad also runs into the area, as their line joins with the NS Chicago Line. Very busy area in Indiana.

No, seriously. I live right across the street from the CSXT Waterville Subdivision. Haha

I agree that the NS Pittsburgh line is great, my favorite place is the Tehachapi mountains. For me it's nearby, and offers great mountain scenery plus good traffic.

For constant activity, I always enjoyed Twin Peaks Road and I-10 in Marana, AZ. Trains were already at speed after leaving Tucson or at speed coming in from Picacho and Yuma. But you have to hit it at the right time, as they fleet the Gila Sub in directional waves, where you either see a train every 10-20 minutes going in the same direction, or you might go for hours with nothing, as it's still 150 miles of single track with passing sidings between Wellton and Maricopa.
