Because of the mountainous terrain, there's a lot of MOW activity, and sometimes it's feast or famine, however typically you should see 35-50/day.

I LOVED sitting on the patio at La Posada in Winslow, AZ and watching the transcon. Barstow yard is great.

My preferred spot is the Iron Range in northern MN. Probably about 50 moves a day on various lines that converge on the area. Pretty good variety of through freight, local service, and ore trains

After what I saw on a Gate 1 bus tour, east of Gillette, WY in late May, I would say most anywhere along the BNSF line east frrom Gillette, especially from there to the junction to the PRB line north-south. In about 40 minutes, while traveling about 30 miles, there were 3 loads and 2 empties seen. Course nobody else on the bus but me knew what we were seeing. Yellowstone was neat but 5 trains in 40 minutes!!

No, seriously. I live right across the street from the CSXT Waterville Subdivision. Haha
I used to live in sight of the EJ&E so I know how that is. The CNW was buying up everything they could get fro the ROCK when it was going through bankruptcy and it made for some amazing run through trains on the during the years I lived there!

                  Nice. On purpose or coincidence?

20 years ago, we considered buying a house that backed up to one of the ATSF tracks leading towards the Alliance, TX yard. That didn't happen, and probably for the best because the houses do tend to shake a bit when you're within a couple hundred feet.

Fast forward to now and we are starting to build next to a NS mainline.... we don't feel them because of all the cliff we are on, but I'll definitely be hearing them on the Rathole for the next week as we do another week of tree felling. I'll have to set up a trail cam at the overlook one of these days.

I will say I much prefer watching from 500 feet away, as we can also hear the echoing thru the canyon... up close, the echoes get drowned out.

So far, the power consists have been pretty good, though I personally would rather see more CSXT power than I would the Guilford/Pan Am junk. It's been mostly CSXT SD40-2's, SD23T4's, GP40-2's, GP38-2's mixed with the MEC/Pan Am C40-8's, GP40's and GP40-2LW's.

Coincidence really. We shopped around for a few houses, and this one turned out to be in the better shape, or so it seemed, been dealing with a soggy basement, but I think I've managed to get that under control, and the LP siding needs to be completely redone, as well as replace the old crank style windows, not a fan of those. At the time CSX was only running 4 days a week, but now it's been bumped up to 7. Thankfully it's eastbound goes by between 11am and 12:30pm, and the westbound goes by around 3:30pm to 5pm, depending how the interchange goes between them and EMR at Mile 0, I'm at mile 12.
Don't really feel the shaking unless they get into the power or into dynamics a little too hard and then you'll feel it, but being welded rail, it's pretty smooth, even at 25mph. 40 will be interesting.

Hill 582 on Cajon Pass and anywhere between Calente and Bealville on Tehachapi.
                        Cheers!

Eric, that is neat. I formerly rented a duplex in Walton, KY because it overlooked the place where the NS and CSX mains converge and run parallel for a short distance. LOTS of trains on both. Loved waking up to thunder and whistles in the night.

That's a million dollar view right there. Almost considered buying a house right near the railroad tracks myself.
