20 years ago, we considered buying a house that backed up to one of the ATSF tracks leading towards the Alliance, TX yard. That didn't happen, and probably for the best because the houses do tend to shake a bit when you're within a couple hundred feet.

Fast forward to now and we are starting to build next to a NS mainline.... we don't feel them because of all the cliff we are on, but I'll definitely be hearing them on the Rathole for the next week as we do another week of tree felling. I'll have to set up a trail cam at the overlook one of these days.

I will say I much prefer watching from 500 feet away, as we can also hear the echoing thru the canyon... up close, the echoes get drowned out.
Eric there were two reasons I started to love trains the first being I grew up a few blocks from the Chicago Aurora and Elgin interurban yards in Wheaton so there were trains everywhere and also the CNW was right at the end of the block. My 4th grade classroom faced the CNW and believe me my grades suffered that year. The 2nd was and relates to your story of the house shaking was my grandparents home in Elmwood Park were the Milwaukee Road was on the other side of the alley instead of homes. You name it I saw it from Baldwins to Fairbanks Morse units, EMD cows and calfs, geeps and dozens of commuter traffic behind F and E units. The highlight of the day was when the joint UP/Milwaukee Road "cities" trains would slam through at track speed with quartets of A and B E units and 15 to 20 car consists with everything they had now that would shake the house. The neighbor nextdoor was a hogger for Milwaukee Road with high seniority and when he was in the right seat of the varnish he let us all know he was coming through especially with no time for the traditional shave and a haircut salute. That's what groomed me to trains!

My grandparents' home was just about the same distance off the Crivitz-Iron Mountain mainline on the MILW. Pulpwood and manifest trains running out the slack was a wake-up call most mornings.

Rather a long time ago (1978 or thereabouts) I had a holiday at St Goar in the Rhine valley. There are busy main lines on both banks of the river, both passenger and freight. As a bonus there is a lot of river traffic, with a light control system in place because of the brisk current through the gorge. I don't know if it still happens but there were helper tugs assisting some of the upstream traffic.

It's busy and very scenic, I can recommend it!

So, this is from my front lawn, looking across US Route 2, at the CSX Waterville Sub, formerly the District 1, or MEC Eastern Division...

Agreed. Both are great places. Haven't been to Cajon for a while, but railfan and film Tehachapi a few times each year.

Fort Madiison, Iowa on the Transcon. Usually over 60 trains a day. Hannibal sub runs parallel near the swingbridge. Sit at the Lost Duck brewery, have a cold one and watch the trains roll by right across the street… Good times!

Over 25 years ago, I had a sister living in Naperville, Illinois. Being from Canada, I was able to go down and visit her, and the two places I spent a lot of time were West Chicago on the UP and Eola yard for the BNSF. On the way back to the airport, we would pass Bensonville and see CP/Soo trains.
                          I miss those days. lol

For me it was at work. One of our wells is located adjacent to the LIRR Ronkonkoma Line, just east of the Farmingdale Station. Once New York and Atlantic took over freight operations, got to see more then just the EMUs. Before the line was electrified saw plenty of push-pulls then too.

I'm planning to spend a little time at West Chicago on Sunday afternoon. Where is the best place to park? Any spots where I definitely should not park?

                              Thanks

JB Tower is pretty straight forward on a normal day. Don't park by the tower itself, but look in the southwest corner along Washington.
