• 15th Anniversary

This month marks the 15th anniversary of the release of Microsoft Train Simulator, the software that got this community started. MSTS has kept this web site busy for all these years with nearly 30,000 files in our library and active discussions in our forums.

It's also the 15th anniversary of TrainSim.Com. At this point in our history we need to consider where to go in the future. MSTS is getting pretty old, the hobby is moving in various directions, some less clear than others. Where does this community fit and what do you the members want from it?

We've opened up a discussion of these topics in the forums and invite you to join and help plan our future.

This website is the best. Without it, the people who run the site and the people who have uploaded so many amazing files, I would haven't learned so much about trains. Thanks to all who have made this site possible and enabled me to enjoy trains in a way not possible without this site and MSTS/Open Rails.

Congrats on the 15th anniversary. Train Sim has done so much. It provided an outlet for developers of all sorts and gave the armature a place to come get answers. MSTS is still lagging behind in what other train sims has been able to accomplish. For example Railworks as far as graphics, Run 8 as far as life like operation in the cab and functionality and physics. Thanks to BIN. Open Rails has done a lot. Combine all of that into where I think Microsoft MSTS 2 was headed. Google earth inserted into the game. That may not be what Train-sim can do but for the payware and professional developers. Just a few thoughts.

Would like to see more collaboration between Open Rails and MSTS Train-Sim in the area of error messages that keep coming up (yes, I am bringing up 'Track Node' errors again)...there have to be individuals in both communities that can get together to discuss these errors and form teams to resolve these issues...it would definitely make for a better working platform for OR and numerous ideas for expansion and improvement.

Regional involvement in Model Railroading Tradeshows throughout the country to provide wider exposure and a greater audience than ever before...

Video 'How-To' clinics for those who want to begin building and reskinning equipment from the experts like Paul Charland, Moe Smith and many others...then folks like myself who wish that someone could or would build and upload a particular piece of equipment, scenery, utility, map or whatever could contribute more than just the $$$ to the annual fund (not that I am complaining)...just my $0.02 worth/Bill Stevens

Man-O-Man, I can agree with this....that warning pops up in more routes...not being a route builder, I have no idea how to fix, or if there is a fix...A look at the OR code of handling this would be welcome.

Has any computer game ever lasted this long? It is due solely to the contributors, route builders, locomotive and car (wagon) builders and scenery builders who took the sow's ear of MSTS and turned it into the silk purse we have today, both in the highest level of BIN enhanced MSTS and the drastic improvement of Open Rails. All on you guys and folks like Nels who keep the keys to the online kingdom. Well done, simmers!
