SOUTH WESTERN EXPRESSWAYS
Westbury to Taunton
Completed in 1906, Westbury to Taunton is part of the Reading to Taunton line and a major branch of the Great Western Main Line which diverges at Reading station. It runs to Cogload Junction (east of Taunton) where it joins the Bristol to Exeter and Penzance Line.
The line became a through route on 2 July 1906 with the completion of the Langport and Castle Cary Railway. Previously, from 5 May 1848, through trains from London to Plymouth had to run via Bristol on a longer route, often called the 'Great Way Round'.
Bristol to Westbury
The line from Bristol to Westbury is part of the 'Heart of Wessex Line', also known as the Bristol to Weymouth Line, which runs from Bristol Temple Meads to Weymouth via Westbury.
Bristol to Exeter
The line from Bristol to Exeter is a major branch of the line from Paddington to Bristol and runs south-west from Bristol.
