OpenRails is designed for present day operating systems, but there are a few considerations you'll need in order to run older MSTS content.

Installing MSTS on Win 10 and higher is possible in some cases, but requires a few steps to be succesful.

Installing and running applications like Route Riter, ConBuilder, and TSRE is fairly straight forward, but you might need to take a few extra steps beyond the installer in order to read and write to your Routes and Train content folders.

It's not necessary to install MSTS to use MSTS content, but there are a few steps that you might still need to take to let those applications run correctly.
