Yes - the only way to use lights on objects in MSTS is to fake it using AddATex for the material in your modeling program.

With many moving towards Open Rails, the extra detail shouldn't be too problematic. I would, however, not include rivet detail, but the ribs and support channels should be OK.
These are the same folks who have a couple of RR Crossing games - object: to send as many cars across the tracks without getting whacked by a train. Now there's a game for kids to learn from....
