Terror Warning Issued for Rail, Transit

By Deborah Charles
Reuters

WASHINGTON (May 23) - The Department of Transportation has issued a warning about possible attacks on rail and transit systems across the country, law enforcement officials said on Thursday.

The department's warning was sent out on Wednesday and was based on unconfirmed and uncorroborated information, one law enforcement official said.

"It involves rail and transit systems ... and is about possible attacks," he said.

The Department of Transportation consulted the FBI before issuing the warning, but the FBI did not put out a matching alert or advisory to law enforcement officials across the country, the official said.

He did not have details on how many cities' transit systems were being put on alert.

Transportation Department spokesman Chet Lunner said that although the general threat was made against subway systems and no particular cities were targeted, the department decided to expand its advisory to include rail systems across the country as well.

The department is not advising the rail and transit systems to take any special precautions as part of its warning other than to maintain heightened awareness, Lunner said.

This is the latest of a series of warnings eight months after hijacked airplanes slammed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a Pennsylvania field on Sept. 11, killing about 3,000 people.

Over the past week, a host of top U.S. officials have issued a series of warnings of possible fresh attacks on the United States.

Vice President Dick Cheney warned over the weekend about the probability that extremists could launch fresh attacks. FBI Director Robert Mueller said on Monday another attack was "inevitable," and told President George W. Bush this week that it would be difficult to stop another attack.

Officials said there has been a lot of intelligence coming in over the past few weeks warning of a possible attack, but they said it varied in terms of specificity and reliability.

The FBI already warned this week of possible general threats against landmarks in New York City, including the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge.

The United States blames Saudi-born militant Osama bin Laden and his al Qaeda network for the Sept. 11 attacks, and a detained member of bin Laden's inner circle has been the source of many of the recent warnings.

Senior al Qaeda leader Abu Zubaydah, who was captured in Pakistan in March, has provided information recently that has led to alerts about possible threats to the landmarks in New York, apartment buildings, banks in northeastern U.S. states, supermarkets and shopping malls.

Officials acknowledge Zubaydah may not be telling the whole truth, but officials are erring on the sign of caution as they issue warnings.

The law enforcement official did not know the source of the information for the warning on transit and rail systems.

But another U.S. official said it was not believed to be linked to Zubaydah.

I grew up during the Second World War and the nuclear threats and warnings of the Cold War! I long ago tired of the threats and the unconfirmed and/or unsubstantiated alledged threats by our current crop of terrorists; ie, our Attorney General who has declared war on the US Constitution! In fact I'm more frightened by our own political terrorists who use these threats to prop up a mediocre political administration to maintain popularity!

It would be nice if the Congress would actually declare War rather than our political leaders using the word war as a catch phrase to justify their ineptness.

Let them start by cleaning up our internal security mess in the FBI, CIA, NAS and any other organization that are responsible for gathering intelligence and assessing its contents. Better yet, let President Bush establish a cabinet post of Secretarty of Homeland Security who has the resources to deal with the mess we have in Washington, DC!

I ride light rail to work everyday. I'm taking a trip this July on Amtrak from San Francisco to Philadelphia and then flying home. I just hope I survive the weekend holiday traffic to live that long http://www.magicdb.net/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Certainly they won't be hijacking any trains and ramming them into grand edifices. It's actually hard for me to picture trains being much target excepting perhaps ones carrying flammable fuels or explosives. Seems a rather difficult feat to pull off and I'd dismiss any rail system as a likely target. I think this particular lot of hooligans are a bit brighter than to even waste their time on rail systems, much grander and easier targets. Unfortunately, perhaps, but certainly true.

All aboard.

Declare war on whom? They declared war on terror. That's much like declaring war on drugs. Hopefully it will have more success than the latter, which in my humble opinion is 33.3% propaganda, 33.3% government money laundering and 33.3% tom foolery, and 0.1% inert ingredients.

LAST EDITED ON May-24-02 AT 03:03PM (EDT)[p]War..what war? I fought in a police action that was never declared a war as such, but 50,000 of my comrads never made it home.

We should declare war on any country that harbors and supports an open attack on the United States and kills American citizens!
If our alledged Allies don't like it, tuff sh--! The EU has already declared economic war against our country and our steel industry yet they don't hesitate running to us for help when they stub their collective toes!

I apologize to the members of this forum for raving and ranting about things political as it is a Train Sim forum, but I'm one fed up "Liberal Democrat"! Now those are two dirty words! :-)

Well that cuts my railfanning down. I always seem to attract attention when i'm railfanning, especially at night. Its a place downtown where it is well lit and you can easily see a train and train crews have called me in numerous times. And the sad part about it is that the police station is a block away in clear view of me. I seriously doubt that a common sense criminal would do anything in plain view of the police station. But being a minority aint easy where I live anyways, but life goes on.

Yeah that was my main point to posting the story...not to instill fear that trains will be taken over or whatever but just to let everyone know that "the man" will probably be super-extra alert.

BTW, good to hear some political philosophy. (Even if it's wrong! :-P)

<<Declare war on whom? They declared war on terror.>>

wake up, you're like a baby who never watched any news other then CNN.

No one declared war on terror, and no one in the world is allowed to fight trerror, Israel is not allowed, tens die every day, you don't even know about it. Russia is not allowed to fight terror, Macedomia is not alowed to fight terror, that "war against terror" bullshit was created to keep you sleeping and not to interfier with US and European alegarchy making money on arab oil.

Here's what you missed (overslept):
Arabs said to your government: "we let your rich brothers and cousens make money on our oil but for that you have to pay with human lives, and god forbit you let other countries fight terror!"...

The entire world has to suffer because of these f*cking jihad/shithad PARASITES all because 10-20 rich guys on the West want to make more money on arab oil then they already have.

One parasite got arrested/killed in Israel or elswhere, wow, he got killed!! his rights are violeted, the news just don't shut up about it!!
The bus full of women and children, the restaurant, school gets blown up by parasites in Israel every day, public places by Chechen border in Russia get blown up twice a month, and so on and so on, and I hear NO WORD about it, total silence!!!

such a disgusting behavior, worst then that of nazis' and terrorists' together!

10 rich guys sold the world to devil... why not? sounds good...

Chad,

I wish we were close by so that I could stand there with you...do you think we could explain what one minoity (?) type person and a big, fat, grumpy, scowling old goat like me, enjoy looking at choo choo trains! Shades of the sixties...brings back memories of when I was young, skinny and thought I could help save the world!
