    GP7 Hi-Nose and an RS-11?

They both look pretty similar to me..why not just GP7-S, for 'switcher', or GP/S 11 (General Purpose/Switcher)?

The locomotives really were pretty similar, but they were built by different locomotive suppliers who each had their own model designations.
The 'GP7' was built by General Motors 'ElectroMotive Division' (EMD). The 'GP' was abbreviation for 'General Purpose', which at EMD meant a hood type locomotive with four axles. At EMD, '7' meant it had 1500 horsepower using a 16-cylinder series 567 diesel motor.
The 'RS-11' was built by American Locomotice Company 'ALCO'. The 'RS' was abbreviation for 'Road Switcher', which at ALCO meant a hood type locomotive with four axles. At ALCO, '11' meant that it had 1800 horsepower using a 16 cylinder series 251 diesel motor.

    Troy,
Go to Trains Mag and get a copy of "Diesel Spotter's Guide"...My Dad gave me an old copy and it comes in handy when he's not around to answer my questions!

    Biggest spotting differences:

    RS11: Dynamic brake vents
    GP7: Dynamic brake blister

RS11: Flattened ends with rounded corners
GP7: Slightly angled front and rear hood sections

RS11: Hood is notched at corners
    GP7: No corner notches

RS11: Brake wheel on short hood
GP7: Brake wheel/lever on short hood

    :)

    Cheers!

Another spotting difference would be the truck assemblies. An RS11 would have the AAR type B, while a GP7 would have EMD 'Blomberg' trucks.
