    Default Freight Question

What do them freight cars carry that look like the top half of a tanker car cut off and then that's layed down onto a freight car chassis?

I can't totally picture what you are describing... a steel coil car perhaps?

Your description is not too clear but it sounds like you are talking about coil cars. They carry coils of sheet steel from steel mills to fabricating plants. They could also be carrying coils of wire or cable.

    Default ANother Freight Question

Here's another one for you...Does anyone know what is usually carried by a "COLTAINER"? I see loads of them plus gray boxes (look like intermodal stuff) passing by on th CSX line here outside of PHilly.

Judging by the accident a week or so ago, I though the COLTAINERS might be hauling refuse.

    Anybody know?

If you mean containers, they can contain anything, just like trucks.
If you really mean coltainers, I have never heard of them.

If you saw about 15 or more of this cars in a row, it probily was trash from NY city going south to be buryed.

It probably is coil cars that I'm seeing then.

I think he/she means containers not coltainers.

No. They say "Coltainer" on the side. They are gray and shorter than the normal 40+ feet semi containers you commonly see.

I'll see if I can snag a pic and post it one of these days.

I think it may be loads of trash as was mentioned in a previous post.

It could be traction motors. Some roads send their traction motors to a central repair facility. The motors are put on flat cars and a hood is placed over the motors to protect them from the elements.

I have seen these too! They are gray and they do indeed say 'COLTAINER'. They are like miniature-sized containers. I saw a train about 25 flat cars long hauling these containers (just outside of Newark, Maryland (suburb of Philly) on my vacation thru the Northeast.
