When the reverser is centered in the neutral position, the prime mover reduces it's idle RPM's a bit. Not a whole lot, but enough to conserve some fuel. Additionally, any other locomotives in the consist with the low idle feature will also idle down when the master unit's reverser is centered. EMD came out with this feature in the 70's and GE a few years later. Upgrade kits have been available to add the low idle feature to older locomotives.

On newer engines equipped with autostart, center the reverser will allow the engines to shut down.

    Default Save fuel???

How can you save fuel by centering the reverser when idle? Does it cut off fuel-supply?
Is it like putting your car in free gear when going downhill? Yes, there are manual gearboxes.:7
