    People! It's a virus. It's in the wild. 99% of the time the sender is spoofed... it's done by a piece of code, not an individual... do ya understand that?

    These virus guys, see... they like to collect EMAIL ADDRESSES... and when they have a whole bunch... the programs... they start using them... it's called "seeding"...

    After that... It's SPAM. They hope you read your email... Anyway... Someone who had managed to maybe "lift" CAL's email address book is using all the emails it contained... it's not the first time Cal's email has been used since he's mentioned it in the past.

    This has nothing to do with MSTS. Bored? Read this: http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1634080,00.asp

    Pete
    I'm the one that posted in regards to Cal's addy being spoofed a couple weeks back,normally when something like that hits my Ebox I just delete it and don't think much more of it since it's usually a one time attempt(at least with the auto senders)what made me suspicious was it kept coming about the same time for 3 days in a row.
    That's when I posted the "Attn Cal R" post to give him a heads up that he either had a virus or someone was spoofing him, next day no email from Cal, that sounded more like a manual send and someone figured I was wise to what was going on and layed low, they started sending again once last week sometime and today apparently figuring I've suddenly gone stupid.
    Since I don't recall Cal ever Emailing me I can't figure why he'd have my addy(not that I'd have a problem if he did)

    Default What was the strange thing the dog did in the night???

    The dog did nothing, Watson, that's what was strange!

    FYI, the way these spammers get email addresses is by sending out random names with "@sbcyahoo.com" or whatever after each name. They send out [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], and so on and so on. "[email protected]" and "[email protected]" get kicked back along with hundreds of others as undeliverable, not a valid address. Then they look for the gaps, since "[email protected]" did NOT get kicked back along with all the others, it must be a valid email address.

    So there's really nothing you can do about it, other than set your spam filter to kick anything with multiple addresses similar to yours into the bulk folder, and periodically check the bulk folder to make sure no legitimate email got in there and delete the contents. And if your mailbox don't have a virus checker, scan any attachment before opening it even if it's from someone you know. Curiousity killed the computer, what these bozos rely on is people who just HAVE to look in case it's something important. This for example;

    [Link Expired]

    Can easily dupe the unwary, but first off a legitimate company would not mass mail something like that (jwarczak, jward2000, jwarde, jwarden, that's an obvious SPAM tipoff), and secondly altho the spelling looks okay, the phrasing "if not completed within the nearest time" is definitely from somebody whose native language is not English. Assuming I actually HAD a citibank card I would have made a phone call using the number from my own card to check, I certainly wouldn't have blindly clicked on the link and "confirm your banking details"! Unfortunately many people will respond to something like that (coughing up every secret detail since they think they're communicating with the bank) and then wonder where their money ran off to.

    Yep. Brute force spamming. The nice thing about this method is you can set up a spam trap account fairly easy. Pick a nice common name on your domain. I was lucky enough to get [email protected] John is now a popular guy who gets several hundred email a day.

    So what good is that? Well, I give the account out to no one. Any mail arriving at this account is guaranteed unsolicited, and therefore safely considered spam.

    My Spam filter trains it's bayesian filter from input to this account, then is kind enough to flush the contents after processing. It "learns" from all the crap coming in, then any normal mail comming to my personal box is "hip" to all the latest spammer tricks, and I never even have to see it. :D
