Default BNSF detour on Moffat and UP business train

One of BNSF's hottest trains detoured through the Moffat Tunnel today. It was the Z-NBYWSP9-018A which is a hot UPS train. It normally uses the southern transcon, but all the recent problems in California forced it to detour over UP trackage rights to Denver and points east. What's amazing is that fact that just a simple intermodal train can stir so much excitement. We grow tired of endless yellow coal trains so a 4000ft intermodal train is a welcome and rare site.

Very nice shots and good catch! :D
Amazing how UP would put BNSF's hottest train in the hole for 3 hours... Sheesh I bet BNSF will get UP back for that one :+

I thought BNSF quit using SD40-2's on High Priority trains due to fuel usage?

Would this be a BNSF crew or a UP crew? Reason I ask, a area such as Moffatt, with the grades and all, a BNSF crew probally does not know the area all that well, so I was just curious if a UP crew is actually controlling the train, or does it matter?

I think BNSF will use anything that moves just about now to get their trains to where they need to be :P.

HUh!? Never heard that before. If it has fuel and horsepower, they'll use it. You typically find new Dash9's on intermodel trains. Most the time they're nice enough to put it on the point.

Its a BNSF crew. BNSF has crews permanetly assigned to the moffat sub for trackage rights trains. In order to work on any route you have to qualify on it. For heavy mountain grade routes you must qualify every six months.

BNSF got trackage rights from Denver to California as part of the UP-SP merger. BNSF crews their own trains from Denver to Provo, UT. From there UP runs them. BNSF couldn't justify a crew base from Provo -west because they don't have enough trains running.

Actually probably the other way around after BNSF liked to delay UP's bullet train for their own Z-NBYWSP bullet train.
