Does it give you any sort of error message, or is it straight to desktop?

First of all, did you recently install a new route, new activity, or new train that might give a S/DS message? Could you give us you system specs like video card, HD, ram, etc... Do you have anything running in the background that might hogged up your memory? A little more information could help us to determine what the problem is.

256 Meg of ram is barebones minimum for XP. You may want to think about upgrading your ram if possible. I am not saying this is your problem but MsTS would run a lot better on your machine with 512 meg or better.

I would suggest getting more memory...XP needs a fair amount just to run and MSTS loads lots of data when it runs a route also...maybe you are just on the limit...at today's prices it is not a big investment.
Clearing out 'junk' and defragging might help too...
    That's my 2 pennies worth :-)

I also never did the restart so MSTS could play right so I removed the whole trainsim and started over.
