    On a brake stand what is "continuous suppression" and what is it used for? Also when there is a "hold" position on a brake stand what does this do and when is it used?

    Continuous and suppression should be two seperate things. The Continuous/handle off position are used when a locomotive is in the trailing position. It's basically the 0 psi setting. This position is used in conjunction with the little cut in/out valve on the front of the brake stand labeled as such. This position is also used sometimes by engineers to keep the engine from dumping when an angle cock is cut in too fast - sometimes called "lapping the air". The Suppression position is used to recover from a penalty application of the brakes when initiated by such devices as a dead mans peddle, cab signal/locomotive speed limiter, or an alertor. This position allows the valves under the cab to reset and permit operation again. Hold position should be the same as "lap" which cuts off the outward flow of air when making a reduction of brake pipe pressure or consequently with the graduated release feature of some passenger equipment it can also be used to incrementally increase air pressure when a "self lapping" feature isn't present on the particular brake stand in question. Some types of non self lapping brakes - Type 6, 14, 24 and self lapping 26, 30cw, and all electronic air brakes. Hope this helps.
