Default View the locomotive too close, MSTS crashes!!

    Happy Year Everyone,
I was working with Dick Cowen E8's, from his "Kit", and when I got too close to view the engine, I was just throw out of MSTS.
And I mean throw to staring it my desk top, no error message, or no call home to Bill.
I ran the engines through Route Riter, and ConBuilder with no errors picked up.
Just one note, when I am using #4 cam view and feel like playing Superman. I bounce off the car-body and the MSTS me right back to desk-top.
Should I just give up on a PDWRR E8 engine?

    Thanks

    Hey

I got the same problem, but its with some of Danny Beck's MLT SD70M. It runs well, but with the #4 view, get too close and it crashes. I love these locos but can't run them with that problem. Waht should I do??

This is a common thing with high poly count units. Mine will crash every now and then, but as far as I know there's no way to fix this without rebuilding the unit with less polys....

One thing I noticed was the replacement "S" file was not compressed.
So I tried once more and checked my frame rate, and I had 19 on a real close up which is not too bad just before the crash.
Alls well, it would have been I nice engine.

Jason, I checked my SP SD70m #9804 from "The Crossing" and it had one large ace file. So I opened it with ToolTga2, and recompressed without changing anything. And was I able to reduce down by half its size.
    Just something you may try.

    Happy New Year

I opened a thread last month ref. this problem and learned it has been a common problem for a long time, with certain engines..It only happens to me in the "4 view" when the camera is over the track, looking down, and it crashes as soon as the camera pans to follow the engine.
It is not the fault of any particular route, and I too was advised it might be a poly-related issue.(Note:I have a "high end" machine)..

FWIW, the issue is a corrupted poly or vertice, and I find it more common with Gmax files than anything else. I have sets upwards of 13,000 polys that don't cause problems, but once in a while I'll get a model that goes whacko (regardless of poly count, some as low as 200). Finding the part and re-creating it does the trick.

First thing I check on a model is whether I can zoom, pan and go through all camera views before it's final. :)

    Cheers!

    Hey Marc,
You may be on to something.
    Mr.Cowen's E7's polys are 8403, the problem E8's are 9515.
Maybe I drop Richard an E-mail to see if it is a corrupted poly or vertice within the file.
Is this something that is "easy" to fix?

I believe the problem is with the E8 model havig a corrupted part like Marc says. IIRC, Richard recommended using the E8 model files from Bill Hemb's repaints (which I believe are fixed).

I would still contact Richard Cowen though.
