    Default Miss Springfield: Car 544

For all you trolley history buffs, I've posted my article Miss Springfield: Car 554 on my website. MS was an early, significant step in the march toward the PCC that revolutionized streetcar design.

Thanks for that great article. Was it really June of 1940 that Springfield cars stopped running? I remember watching them at my grandmother's house in Longmeadow -- but that would mean I was only two years old -- and I would have guessed I was closer to 4 or 5 when they stopped altogether. She lived near the car barn at the State Line, which I also remember.

Well, I was 1 year old at the time and living in northern New Jersey. But they do tell me that's when Springfield cars stopped running.

Of all the many Transportation Bulletins put out by the group at Warehouse Point covering New England trolley lines, you would think at least one would have covered Springfield or Holyoke. I have yet to see a color photo of a Springfield car. I have postcards, but they aren't trustworthy.

    Cheers,
    Al
