    Default Why I selected Trainz....

I decided to write this as just a basic why I picked Trainz over MSTS and why I use both. For the past month's I've been an MSTS junkie and always a loyal fan. I had already tried Auran's first Trainz demo but hadn't enjoyed it. When I heard that Auran came out with a second demo, I thought "Hmmn, I guess it could be better" and I went off to strategyfirst to d-load it. After playing the Trainz demo I was hooked and MSTS started to gather dust on my desktop. By the end of that week, I went down to Electronics Boutique and got Trainz with a GeForce2 MX200 video card, I already knew before hand what a power hungry game Trainz was. When I got home, I quickly un-installed Train Simulator, installed my GeForce2 and then installed Trainz. I was really happy to use the Surveyor part but also fely something was missing... I thought maybe It didn't copy right... No, it was MSTS. I missed the prototypical realism of MSTS vs. the Shiny new great sounding loco's in Trainz. I quickly learned that I needed both to enjoy my Train Simming expereience so I put TS back on my drive. They now co-exist on my Hard-Drive and both rely on each other to cover-up the other's flaws. I will say it now and only once that "I" prefer to use Trainz. That's me and I'm not saying that it's better, I'm saying "I" prefer it for what I do with it. It's not a question of which one is better for everyone, it's a question of which one is better for u? That's about all the 2 cents I have, let me don my flame retardent suit... Ok, now! :-)

Ok. This has been started a few too many times, hasn't it?

MSTS and Trainz have a perfect right to co-exist. One isn't better than the other in any other way than individual personal opinions.

They are both, in my opinion, excellent products and neither is such a piece of junk that you need to return it to the store and regain valuable disk drive space.

They are different enough that they appeal to different people. I consider it to be similar to HO Model Railroading vs Garden Railroading. (Very Different... but each has a right to exist and indvidual people who love their choice dearly for very specific reasons.)

This is not a mutually exclusive game niche. I have both installed on my system and I start the one that fits my mood.(I need a big hard drive though <grin>)

Those who wish to flame either product... probably just want attention... I'd like to see them write a product as good as either... so there. Phhhht!

Ok, I'm off my soapbox now. Flame away.

I totaly agree with you. However MSTS is not on my HD anymore...I wish it was, but it takes 5GB when I install stuff I want.
When I get new HD, both of them are gonna stay. Or, maybe MSTS2 will be out by then with less hanger?:P lol

To the guy 2 posts above me, i totlay agree with you. its like Acela Express vs Acela hhp. there basicly the same thing. IN OTHER NEWS I got myself a new computer for trainz, but when i get my 80 gb drive ill install it on this computer (30 gb is WAAY to small for me ;-))

Well, I just thought I'd serve this as my little offering to the subject. Seeing that people are p/oed enuff about it, I'll let it go. BTW, I've started a passenger route called Steel City for Trainz, It'll be about 8 baseboards at the start but it'll grow... oh I've got plans for that one! ;-) Should be done in a while. :-)

StL&H Hamilton Sub abandoned, not enough time or HD space for another route. :-(

    Tucson Coyote here

Well I have to put my two cents in here (Either that or my 1 Mile of Rail line)

why did I select Trainz.. Basically Two Reasons

Initially I too Was an MSTS Junkie....and I loved the initial Idea that Bill Gate's Group made for Train Sims...(Don't get me wrong MSTS Is a Good idea..Just lacking some of the nuances of real Life Railroading..

of course then when it came to building the layout or track plan I wanted.. Well let's face it.. The Tools in MSTS are for those who have programming skill and can have their Machines "Crash proof.."(modify one thing and the Tools usually (But not always caused a Crash and any work you did went out the window..)

so I'd Say my First reason for Trainz was it's Ease of use..Just Click Drag and Drop..

The Second Reason is probably going to sound a bit silly but here it is..

Trainz has the potential of becoming something that MSTS Could have been but isn't because of the fact that MSTS didn't think along the same lines...In short Trainz is looking at modifying and Addinto to the group in little bite size steps (First up the Collecor, Surveyor and Driver Modules.. Next the Yardmaster Module, and eventually Dispatcher and Online effects (In short short simple upgrades to make a Good thing better..

With MSTS it's ONe BIG Jump and then wait a While.. Then another Big Jump then wait some more..(In fact Trainz has already done two service Pack Upgrades to imporve playability plus the add on of Paint shed so you can create your own Motive Power and Rolling Stock without the hassle of going out and doing all the work..

with MSTS It's a Wait and See Proposition

So when you look at it I'd rather get a 20 GIG Drive Full of Trainz stuff that might be a bit weak but going to get better over time then having a 5 Gig Drive barely able to hold MSTS and have to do programming and scheduling and what not..(In short Trainz is for the Masses MSTS for the elite..)

    Just my two cents..

Yes, around the world people have got their copies EXCEPT (and this is a big exception) us poor sods in New Zealand.

In Auckland (pop. 1,000,000+) there is ONE copy. In the sodding Wharehouse, of all places (a cheap "discount shop"), while specialised computer shops haven't seen hide or hair of it.
