    Default route making help needed

Im learning to write a .csv route using Brett Williams' (BVE Helper) excellent tutorial.I wrote a very simple route using his instructions and notepad in WinXP, but BVE doesnt recognize it as anything but a text file, as far as I can tell.Even adding .csv to its name doesnt help.Im totally new to programming of any kind so how does the text become a real .csv file that BVE recognizes and uses?I have no idea how to make that happen, and Im sure its quite simple.
I did put the route in the Route folder but it didnt appear in the BVE window.

why not use MS Excel? Create a new blank file ther then go save as then scroll down on file types and got to CSV, then save. Then open up the blank file with wordpad if you want.

I use Excel to do my coding anyway, its auto fill features help alot!

Im not sure if I even have Excel, unless its part of XP or MS Works.Im not online at home and I cant check right now.I have read in several places that you can write the files using notepad or wordpad.Maybe they assumed I knew what I was doing. Thanks for the help.

Are you sure that the file's extension is .CSV?

All files with extensions .CSV and .RW being in the Route folder are always listed in the Select Train window...

perhap you have your problem resolved yet
    but
you should know that windows notepad by default always
    save with txt extension
    ej
I want to save something like
    MyBeautifullroute.csv

type "MyBeautifullroute.csv" in save dialog and what happens?

it will be saved as MyBeautifullroute.csv.txt
    dam!!

and worse if you have option in explorer "hide extensions"

    "MyBeautifullroute.csv.txt" will be show
    as "MyBeautifullroute.csv"

    more confusing...

notepad has an other option of save as anyfile or something
like this (my windows use Spanish dialogs )

and I guess that ,right click>propriety , a file in explorer will show
    full name

I just use notepad, although you'll find only wordpad will cope with very large files. You need to save as a .rw file or.b3d, and make sure you have 'all files' selected. I don't ever use excel to make b3d, or csv files.

Yes, you must select in the 'Files of type' field: All Files

And then type .csv or .b3d in the top box, otherwise it will save incorrectly. ;)

So I checked and I dont have Excel. My version of Works has a word processing program and offers a Save As:text file (*txt,*csv) although I dont see a way to choose between them and it just comes up as a text file.
I saw the option in notebook for "all files" but I didnt know what to do with it.Frog3, did you mean I should right click on "all files"and it will show file names?TomBoy,how do you save files in b3d and cvs using notepad?I really want to learn to make routes and objects. Thanks

No, simply type the file name (routename.csv) in the box ABOVE all files when you're saving it, then save it.
