    Default Disappearing objects

I have found several routes that have objects that disappear when you get close to them. The latest is the Netram route. Is there a tutorial on this, or can some one explain to me how it is done?

The problem as stated by Ernie Alston on July 7,2001 stated
"Objects have an axis point and if the axis point preceeds the rest of the object, the object will disapper just before the train reaches its axis"

"The way to minimize this dissapearing effect is to have the axis of the object in the rear. So that the axis is the last part of the object the train reaches keeping the object in view as long as possible usually after most of it has passed by the train. Basically the object should be drawn from the rear to the front so the axis is at the rear."

Save from Crotrainz Forum Erine made the New York #7 line.

    Hope this helps

This is generally true but if the object is less than 25m long and is placed on a 25m mark (xx25,xx50,xx75,xx100) the object will not disappear. This is because BVE keeps the last 25m and the next (3,4,5,600)m in memory but nothing farther back than 25m.

Objects longer than 25m should be drawn in reverse, as Jason pointed out. :)

I think hge means that he wishes to use this effect.

The object must be longer than z axis, 25m for it to dissappear. Or, if you mix the distance numbers up in the route file, the objects will also disappear.

Thank you all for the information. Here is what I want to do, has anyone tried something like this so that I may look at a route file.

In heavy rail, it would be unusual to come close to the back of the next train ( not unheard of, underground trains do get close). In Light rail or Bus operations, it is very usual to be close to the next tram or bus or to have something else in your traffic lane. If I make an object of 75 meters depth and place it on the track following the above directions, and make the back face the one with the texture file, the object should stay untill I get to about 75 meters from the back face and then dissapear. Combine this with a rolling fog effect of 60-80 meters and I can hide the objects going out of sight. This would ( I think) give me traffic in my lane that goes away before I get there and sould not "Just Dissappear". It would appear to have moved.

Would this work the way I describe?

This "bug" in BVE can allow for some cool effects. Jon (of TTC Bloor-Danforth "fame") uses this technique to create flashing red signals that clear to amber over lunar as you pass them (you can see a few examples of this in my TTC route).

That sounds logical, but 60-80m fog distance would be VERY VERY thick.

The only way to find out for sure I think would be to try! :)

I have done this effect on the Oxford Street bus route I was tinkering with, by placing a bus infront repeating every 5m with less fog so dissappearing isn't sudden. This is also bing don on my DLR route near Lewisham....

I haven't given too much away have I....

Are you making a BVE bus route then?
