Thread: Object Sites

    Default Object Sites

I got back to work today on the Epsom route (lazy, aren't I ;)) and wondered if there were any sites around that offered a selection of BVE objects such as buffers, trees, buildings etc - or if I'd better start going through other routes and asking permission? Hopefully I'll be able to get down to the real route shortly to take some photos.

    funny you should mention that....

here is a beta for something we did ages ago but we've been too busy to actually finish it off.

    http://tom.aparition.net/obdata/intro.htm

we haven't uploaded anything yet to it (depsite what it might say) but it will be completed when time permits. All material is open source there, and is submitted by authors who are OK with people using their stuff. No doubt one day we'll actually finish it off and start inviting people to contribute again.

    Damon,

There are a number of sites that have free-to-use objects. My own, http://members.lycos.co.uk/eezypeazy has a signal box, island platform shelter, Holiday Inn Expres, detached house (Eezypeazy Towers!), scrap yard, and George Stephenson’s birthplace. I shall be adding other buildings, historic vehicles and modern vehicles in the coming months. Alf Barten’s site has some, including people objects.

Perhaps you might like to consider adding an “Objects Database” to your VR site? I think this would be an invaluable service to the community!

I have a vision of a BVE “Kit Of Parts” which might encourage more people into route development … laying flat track and signalling is very easy with RouteBuilder, and community members who build trains very kindly share them with those of us who don’t. The really time consuming part for a novice is building acceptable scenery…. so, we make a Kit Of Parts available, which “snap” into a RouteBuilder (or any other construction project) BVE layout to give “instant” stations, track side objects and scenery …. to work really well and quickly, object builders might need to agree some standards, eg., distance between parallel tracks, for instance, so that platforms, bridges and so on “snap in” at the correct distance from the track centre … if this was coupled with a “knowledge base”, putting all links to “how to” articles, tips and advice into one place, we have the basis of a very powerful and exciting tool….

Of course, the more original modelling developers do, the greater the variety within routes… as has been said elsewhere, if we all end up using the same items, all routes will begin to look the same.

On the other hand, it would make sense for the Kit to contain a library of track side signs, such as permanent and temporary speed restrictions, whistle boards, and trespass signs…. There’s no sense in us each producing our own!!! Actually, if anyone has a set they would like to make available, it would save me a lot of work and I would be eternally grateful….!!!

Nice objects. The brick retaining walls seem to be missing 'walltopbrown.bmp'

Rats. These were intended for use with the RB Object library; Obviously I've missed out a lib standard bmp. It should just be a standard textured brown; nothing special.
