Passing Paths

Hi everyone,
If two trains are on a single track and are going to pass each other on a short double track, do they both have to have passing paths or does only one have to have a passing path?

I always give them both a passing path (each on its own siding).I tried using a passing path for only one service but it does not appear to work too well.

I you put the path for one train on the main and the other in the hole, you do not need to use passing paths. For passing paths to work, both train paths must either be on the main or the siding.
