    Question Bigger problem - PI Keith said to ask if anyone knows how to fix this

    This problem persists

    after using RD for a random length of time , the controls stop responding and then I get locked - everything !! Can't even use control alt delete or esc or....

    do you have a solution ?

    xp sp3 - 2.6 ghz quad core
    ati radeon hd 3800 512 gb
    4 gb sys ram
    2 terrabyte hard drive space
    direct x, drivers and bios up to date
    using master bin for msts created by otto wipfel

    the above problem did not exist prior to installation of the RD device.

    thanks

    Keith replied :

    The MSTS bin software is an unofficial upgrade to the base MSTS software and may not be fully compatible with the RailDriver. Since MSTS is an older software and had no settings to allow for input other than the keyboard, the RailDriver used a few tricks to get around some of the compatibility issues and convince the software that our device was what it was looking for. If any of the paths or information being sent from MSTS bin are different, that could explain the issues with the controller you've been experiencing.

    You may want to also look at this page and check your video card settings http://www.raildriver.com/support/raildriver.php#ati. If the problem consists we can try troubleshooting other issues, but I can't promise a definite fix for this particular build. I know Otto frequents some of the train sim forums, it may be worth it to try contacting him and see if he knows of your particual issue.

    New one on me, I used every version of BIN since it first came out, I've had Raildriver since 2003, never had any kind of conflict.

    Troubleshooting;
    1. mini route copy of MSTS without bin, we'll call that "NOTBIN"
    2. mini route copy of MSTS with bin, we'll call that "BIN".

    First thing is the BIN version, start that up, fire up the Raildriver, make it freeze. Note which route and which train when you had the freeze.
    Next, NOTBIN, try with Raildriver, same route same train.

    If it consistently locks in the BIN miniroute and consistently does not lock in the NOTBIN version, there's something wrong with the BIN installation. If it also locks up in NOTBIN then you might have a Raildriver problem. So next step is to confirm or eliminate Raildriver, try both BIN and NOTBIN without loading RDmanager at all, drive both (same route same train, remember we need to eliminate variables) using the keyboard, not the mouse. If one or both of those locks up without RDmanager loaded you've eliminated Raildriver, if both will run forever without freezing then you've confirmed Raildriver is the problem.

    What you do next depends on the results of those tests, let us know. Drop a yellow dye marker if you get in trouble.

    Queeg reporting ....

    Tested many configs -
    No crash if the game is saved at least every 10 minutes - otherwise BIN does not matter - BIN or NOTBIN

    Notoriously, the freezeout usually happens on the first run of the day and after restart of computer does not (as long as saved every 10 minutes )

    Any ideas why that is ?? - the save must be resetting something or emptying memory somehow (my guess)

    Redeploying to the keyboard for now .... over

    Cool PI "Keith"?

    Just noticed something, could "PI Keith" be your old nemesis Ensign Keith?

    Back to business, you've eliminated BIN from the suspects, next step is same route, train, activity with the keyboard. "No crash if the game is saved at least every 10 minutes" just saved or saved and reloaded? If it's just hitting the F2 to save every 10 minutes that stops it from crashing, I would suspect a screensaver or power scheme kicking in while the game is running. You got XP, Vista, or Windows 7?

    Question ugh

    Captain Queeg reporting -

    1. Progress has been made BUT difficulties still remain.

    2. I have thoroughly tested the RD on another machine and it runs flawlessly BIN or NOBIN, Mini - install or regular...

    3. My main system is not accepting different installations as the "other" computer does.

    4. It complains thus - attached -

    5. I can't uninstall the most recent raildriver as in add/remove only REINSTALLS it - no uninstall option. There is no uninstall option on the RD disk that I can find. I thought maybe a reinstall would help but it's not really an option if you can't uninstall first.

    *** will contact ensign Keith and ask for an uninstall program ***

    6. I transported one of my mini's to the "other" and no crash or complaint occurred.

    7. I tried again , with a fresh MSTS install on my main and RD did NOT choke on it.

    *. as soon as I tried to use my mini - I got the "DING" with the error message. ( the same mini that worked fine on the "other" )

    XP - OS nevermind the save gimick - it crashes within a couple minutes now - and the "other" has a quick screen saver but does not interfere. I have no power off options enabled.

    ****** I will tell you this - the difference in the 2 machines is that I did NOT install the drivers that came with the RD on the "other" but I DID install them first on the main ---- the newsest driver for RD was directly installed on the "other" WITHOUT a previous version --

    also, I did not uninstall the previous drivers before installing the new drivers - could be a registry problem or driver conflict eh ? -- that is why I need a way to uninstall it completely or know where those entries in the registry are if that's it.

    ... --- ...

    Okay, one thing you left out - did you try launching MSTS on the faulty machine WITHOUT launching the RDmanager first? In other words forget you have a Raildriver, start MSTS and run with just the keyboard, see if you get the crash when the Raildriver software is not loaded.

    That's curious, this;

    would indicate there's some kind of problem with MSTS itself. Next thing to try;

    1. Open Windows Explorer, browse to \Train Simulator\Rail Driver DLLs\EN
    2. Copy the string.dll file, paste into the root of \Train Simulator, YES to overwrite.

    Try it again with Raildriver, same route same trainset, see what that does. Probably need to do that for all the miniroutes if that fixes it in the main installation.

    HI,

    The file you mention was missing from the root but not from most of the mini's -

    Discovered -- the method of starting a route and then starting the RD causes problems - I find that by making the RD miss (by removing the target .exe ) will allow me to point it to another install and not incur the problems that I get with the formentioned method. I guess my machine just does not like that method.

    1. Are there other .rdf files for engines such as this
