Thread: CNW Harvard Subdivision

  1. #1

    Default CNW Harvard Subdivision

    Overview

The Harvard Subdivision runs 63 miles northwest from downtown Chicago to the town of Harvard, just south of the Wisconsin border. The former Lake Geneva subdivision crosses the Harvard at Crystal Lake Jct, and continues north 7.5 miles to McHenry, IL.

At Harvard, the line continues northwest as the Madison Subdivision for another 69 miles to Madison, WI. Along the way, there's a large classification yard at Janesville, WI and a General Motors vehicle assembly plant which was in operated until 2008. There are large grain operations at Evansville and Clinton.

There is also a five mile short line between Harvard and Chemung, which serves a grain elevator, and interchanges with the UP in Harvard.

At Des Plaines, the Harvard Sub crosses the New Line Subdivision at Deval. From Deval and Seeger, the New Line heads south, curves around O'Hare Airport and crosses over the MILW/SOO/CP Bensenville Yard and then leads into Proviso, the CNW's massive classification yard. Proviso is slightly over 4 miles long, and has several sub-yards. The northern portion of Proviso yard is one mile long, and has 28 holding tracks. The middle portion of the yard is 1.5 miles long, and has over 60 classification tracks and 16 intermodal loading tracks. The eastern portion of the yard has another 40 holding tracks.

Only a portion of the Proviso yard (Yard Nine) is depicted in the route.

    Traffic

There is considerable commuter train activity on the Harvard Sub, with over 22 trains daily operating from various points on the Harvard to Chicago Passenger Terminal, and three trains operating over the McHenry Branch.

Prior to the closure of the GM plant in Janesville, there were frequent thru-trains operating between Janesville and Proviso. Grain trains operate seasonally, plus nightly locals serving industries along the entire length of the Harvard, including the North Avenue and Avondale yards east of Deval.
