Virginia Railway Express can run these cars into Union Station, but they specifically modified the tunnel under Union Station and made other changes to make it work. As for the rest of the corridor, Amtrak did consider running Superliners from Philadelphia. The plan was dropped, but low level doors are a bigger issue. I recall that the Superliners fit, but there was some concern that they were too close to the wires. In fact the B&O and later Amtrak banned passengers from the upper level of the dome car of the Capital Limited in Washington DC because of the same concern.

MARC has bi-levels. That is not fictional.

MARC's bi-levels (as the photo posted by Steve shows) are of a different design. While they have a similar floor plan, they are lower in profile specifically to fit into the northeast corridor clearance envelope. You can compare them to cars run by MBTA from the same builder, which are noticeably taller.
Chris with all due respect VRE did not modify the tunnel into Union Station - I think you are confused with the modifications to the Baltimore tunnel(s).... The Union Station tunnels run Gallery cars every day and have for quite some time also previously they ran Bombardiers and Kawasaki BiLevels - they have also run Superliners thru there and an experiment with stack trains.....

My minor tweaks to the Cab Car.......

    New front stripes layout...

Cleaned up the sides a bit....

I am probably going to number these in the 8000 series but I'll do it later....

    Hi Chuck,

Respect appreciated. But I am pretty sure that one track (only) was lowered under Union Station before the gallery cars and Sounder cars started running on VRE. Remember that in the beginning VRE used the ex Budd rebuilds and the single level cars built in Brazil. (now up in Connecticut).

Interesting that there was a stack train experiment. Especially in light of the $170 million or whatever is being spent on making clearance improvements on the Virginia Ave tunnel.

Nice I changed the paint scheme on the front a little because marc does not run this type of car and I liked the original striping pattern.
