Thread: I need ideas for a new RW freeware modelling project, please

Default I need ideas for a new RW freeware modelling project, please

There's a thread, RSC Maybe changing their Repaint Policy, that went off topic ... we started talking about a lack of freeware for RW (although some people disagree that there's a lack). Anyway, it's been a while since I did any modelling and now I'm feeling the urge to start up 3DCrafter again. I'd like to offer my time to make some more freeware, and this time for the US scene. So, I invite readers of this thread to post any suggestions they have. It has to be something for which I can get (or you can send me) drawings with the proper dimensions, and there must be enough photos on the internet for me to be able to make the textures. If it's a locomotive or car you suggest, I'd need detailed engineering drawings. Whatever it is, I'll do my best to make it as good as I possibly can.

One other thing ... it has to be something that hasn't already been done as payware, and that no payware developer is likely to release.

Well, the game really needs a new 1890 Baldwin 2,8,0 Consolidation.

    One of these.

I'm making a route set in 1890 and this engine would be perfect for getting up the mountain route. The route will be freeware and around 120 miles long once finished.

As well, it has been a long time since a freeware steam locomotive was made for the game. More diesel then steam has so far been made for the US side.

Next step is to find a more detailed set of drawings (could this be it? http://www.livesteamlocomotives.com/.../atn_2-8-0.htm). I'd also need enough technical details to do the engine blueprints ... or someone else with more knowledge of that might offer to give me a hand.

Looks like that would work, since the consolidation was used by many railroads. Some looked different, but all were about the same in performance. The consolidation was a very powerful engine in it's time, they were built for extreme routes and climbing. Usually a consolidation would have been able to climb a 2% or 3% percent grade without getting stuck, although it was a very slow progress.

The 2,8,0 built by Cecil Kerr seems to be very underpowered when it comes to getting up a inclined plane.

OK, I'll send off for the drawings. They say it can take 3 to 4 weeks for them to arrive. It'll be a big project! I'll post here again when I get started.

It will be nice to have a steam engine that climbs a incline plane well.

And if you could get the controls to respond by the mouse it will allow the user to venture up the slopes of the route better.

It doesn't matter which kind of 2,8,0 you build, as long as it's the standard gauge version.

    Never mind the 2,8,0 Consolidation.

I found another engine with more reference photo's more drawings more cab pictures and I'm going to look for the stats of it.

How can I email all the pictures and information to you so you can use, if you would rather build one of these.

Do you think maybe you could squeeze in a CSX AC4400CW? Im working on a route on which K185 runs on, a heavy taconite train that always has either AC44's or ES44AC's.
