Post Air Brake Test Before Descending A Hill

Is an air brake test done before a train goes down a hill?

If yes, what is the proceedure?

    Thanks,

    Rob

Here you have some information, you can download the PDF of "Air Brake and Train Handling No. 5", and is updated.

I always do a running test before reaching the crest and starting down a big hill, I want to know that they are working before I need them.

Can you give a brief description of how to do a running test?

    Thanks,

Sure. Running track speed in the 2nd or 3rd notch, make a first service reduction and see if the rear drops like it should, then I would make a total reduction of 10 pounds, per the rules, and after the brakes start to take hold, release them. Now I know that when I need then on the hill, they will apply. I do this early enough to assure that every thing is back to a full charge.
