Default GM&O ... The Last 'Midnight Mail', 05/01/1971

These images record the final run of the GM&O 'Midnight Mail' (aka 'The Midnight Special') on the last lap of its St. Louis-Chicago journey. The sequence captures the train approaching Joliet & making the station stop, then proceeding on towards downtown Chicago for the final time under GM&O management. As noted, these images were captured on the morning of 'Amtrak Day' (5/1/71) with the train having departed St. Louis the night before at roughly 11:30pm on April 30. A pair of EMD E7 units are on point for the final run, and the consist is heavy with the customary head-end traffic including 2 RPOs and multiple express/baggage cars.
