Default "Warning - throttle: locked. Release dynamic brake and then re-try"

    Hello,

I am receiving the above warning using the SLI F40 VIA locomotive and HEP2 passenger cars when starting an activity and also at a subsequent brake release from stops.

The SLI cab does not feature clickable movable controls which I have found is the work-around in other instances. Despite full brake release and attempts to throttle up or do the shift+; command, nothing seems to unstick that condition except for several minutes of waiting. Because of blended dynamic braking, the , and . keys are non applicable to operating this locomotive.

I've read in a thread on Elvas Tower forum covering European electric locomotives with combined dynamic braking, about different settings in the .eng file needing to be adjusted. I tried every combination of those adjustments to my .eng file but it either didn't alter the behavior of stuck in dynamic braking mode, or else it disabled the dynamic brake completely.

I am relatively new to ORTS (<6 months). If anyone can advise on what setting(s) in the .eng file I would need to change to un-stick the dynamic brake, please let me know!

Is this loco 6449? I have used it with no issues, but, you have to use a light finger on the "D" key when throttling down as it will go immediately into Dynamic braking. Also at the start of the activity, apply regular engine brake to 3-6% then apply the throttle via the D key so the engine revs but doesn't move. If it is time to depart release all brakes and sound the bell and you are off to another adventure.

There are a few other locomotives that respond like this, from various sources.

its actually Christer Tepper's repaints of the 1986 Via scheme, based on SLI's 6429 but the .eng seems identical.

The dynamic and air brake systems on the model are blended; the dynamic brakes engage as soon as I use the airbrakes, regardless of how I handle the throttle.

At a station stop the dynamic brakes will be on since the airbrakes are on, thus I cannot move the throttle out of 0 at all, and the dynamic brake lockout "error" will remain in place for several minutes after the brakes have all been fully released.

Same thing happens with the SLI VIA P42s and their blended braking, although the time held hostage while in Release is alot less (< 10 seconds). Release seems to be keyed off some air pressure value and the F40s take their sweet ole time pumping to get there.

That being said, I never was a fan of the nanny interlock on the reverser either, especially when its tied to wheel rotation in ORTS (yea, right!). I don't see them existing in the real world, anybody who has read any runaway train accident reports knows that the reverser was used in some drastic but failed attempt to stop it. Of course, nobody in the craft can really vouch with certainty unless they had to use them in an emergency.

Another thing that I do when getting ready to leave is the "Shift-?" key to make sure everything is reset. I have not used these locos, I have an assortment of VIA units, in a while and maybe not in Open Rails yet.

You're right Geepster, I didn't notice a long lockout when I did the run with the SLI P42....The OR reverser interlock logic is certainly not prototypically accurate, but thankfully not something that impacts normal operations much, and a quirk I'll live with in exchange for the glorious framerate and resolution.

Shift-? does force the dynamic brake off it seems, along with resetting the normal brakes so maybe I'll just have to accept it as part of operation in OR for now... Thanks for making me aware of the command, Don6218

I'm convinced that the whole reason for this throttle lockout is because the simulator is paying attention to more details in the .eng file that MSTS would ignore or had been exaggerated in some way to get MSTS to produce realistic results. Maybe SLI/Trainsimulations would eventually post some revised .eng files more appropriate for OR.

Agreed. Not only in instances of runaways but in serious situations where there is no other cousre of action to stop the train immediatly regardless of possible damage to the locomotive. When I first started I was taught by a Road Foreman of Engines how to use the reverser in a dire situation and used it once or twice over the years. There is a trick to it and involves using the sanding control as well for more effectiveness. Many non-rails will dispute this fact but the SP and other railroads even allowed for it in the rule book.

i just tried Shift + / and it worked fine. I am not sure about its working in all locos.
